Accidents don’t just happen. The old cliche that they do is a crutch no Soldier can afford to lean on. Things that just happen aren’t your fault. If they just happen no one bears responsibility, no one has a role in prevention. We all should know that isn’t the case. It’s all about cause and effect. Accidents take place when individuals make bad choices.

A 20-year veteran, Master Sgt. Brendan O'Connor, formerly a senior medic on a 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Operational Detachment Alpha, was presented the Distinguished Service Cross for valorous actions during Operation Enduring Freedom.Four other members of the team received the Silver Star, the Army's third-highest award for valor. Binney recovered from his wounds after treatment at Walter Reed and Womack Army Medical Centers, and now is a pre-medical student at the University of Arizona.

Rocket and improvised explosive device attacks, dust-covered ambulances full of injured Soldiers and civilians screeching to a halt, bloody, noisy operating rooms and round-the-clock operations were all part of the most comprehensive medical post-mobilization training ever conducted by First Army. When the last patient was bandaged and the last scalpel was sterilized and stored, the 345th Combat Support Hospital (CSH), the 312th Medical Logistics Company and the 441st Ground Ambulance Company were validated and ready to deploy to save lives and mitigate the suffering of friend and foe alike.

HHC Garrison 1st Sgt. Paul Grosch remembers working with a supply sergeant who returned from Afghanistan and was temporarily assigned to the HHC Garrison staff at Redstone Arsenal while he helped care for his dying father. It wasn’t long before the sergeant’s father lost his battle with cancer. Then, two weeks later, his mother also passed away. “If you haven’t lost a family member before, there is a lot that has to be done after a death that can really get to you. The death and all the other things involved with losing a loved one hits you hard,” Grosch said.
