Anado, a 70-foot motor boat, was built in 1917 at Morris Heights, New York, for use as a pleasure craft. She was leased by the Navy in July 1917 and placed in commission a month later as USS Anado (SP-455). During the remainder of World War I, and briefly thereafter, the craft performed patrol duties in the vicinity of New York City and Long Island. She was returned to her owner in late February 1919.
