USS Chillicothe, a 385-ton casemate ironclad river gunboat built at Cincinnati, Ohio, was commissioned in September 1862. After an extended fitting out period that lasted until early 1863, she began operations on the Mississippi River and its tributaries that continued for the rest of the Civil War. In January 1863, Chillicothe took part in the White River expedition and the capture of Fort Hindman, Arkansas. During the following months, she was engaged in operations against Yazoo Pass, Mississippi, and was there damaged by enemy gunfire. She also participated in the Red River operation in March-May 1864 and subsequent activities in the lower Mississippi region. USS Chillicothe was sold in November 1865. As a civilian-owned ship, she was destroyed by fire in September 1872.
