USS Helena, a 1571-ton gunboat of the Wilmington class, was built at Newport News, Virginia, and commissioned in July 1897. The following year, during the Spanish-American War, she was employed off Cuba. Late in 1898, Helena steamed to the Far East, where she spent more than three decades operating in the vicinity of China and the Philippines. The old gunboat was decommissioned in May 1932 and sold in July 1934.
