USS Hermes, a 340-ton patrol craft, was originally a German-flag auxiliary schooner built in Oakland, California, in 1914. Seized at Honolulu after the United States entered World War I, she was placed in Navy service and formally commissioned in April 1918. Hermes operated on anti-submarine patrols in the Hawaiian Islands, and in August-October 1918 made a cruise through the islands northwest of Hawaii. Ordered placed out of commission in January 1919, she was subsequently used by the territorial goverment of Hawaii and as an auxiliary by the Pacific Air Detachment until sold in October 1926.
