Melville (Steam Tug, 1903)

Melville, a 79.5-foot steam tug, was built in 1903 at Portland, Oregon. She was acquired by the Navy in late April 1918 and placed in commission at the end of July of that year as USS Melville (SP-1078). However, in order to avoid confusion with another ship of that name, she was renamed SP-1078 a few days later. For the rest of World War I, she performed tug duties for the 13th Naval District in the Pacific Northwest. USS SP-1078 was returned to her owner in February 1919.
