Mist, an 59-foot steam launch, was built at Bristol, Rhode Island in 1904 for use as a pleasure craft. She was placed in commission as USS Mist (SP-567) in late April 1917 and formally acquired by the Navy a few weeks later. During World War I, Mist operated near Boston, Massachusetts, on guard and dispatch duties and also supported the Boston area Mine Sweeping Division. She was returned to her owner in early February 1919.
