The steamship Neponset, a 7699 gross ton freighter, was built at Chester, Pennsylvania. Launched in July 1918 under the name Shawmut, she was renamed before completion. The Navy took her over in late October 1918 and simultaneously placed her in commission as USS Neponset (ID # 3581). She made one voyage across the Atlantic to France in November, carrying general cargo and a shipment of horses. She was decommissioned in early February 1919, after returning to the U.S., and was returned to the United States Shipping Board.
