Ships of the Spanish-American War, Revenue Cutters and Light House Tenders

As in other wars, the Revenue Cutter Service and Light House Service, predecessors of the U.S. Coast Guard, were temporarily placed under Navy control during the Spanish-American War. Several of their ships were actively employed off Cuba and elsewhere in the Caribbean area. One, the Revenue Cutter Hudson, heroically rescued USS Winslow when that torpedo boat was disabled by Spanish fire off Cardenas, Cuba. In the Far East, the new Revenue Cutter McCulloch, in transit from the Atlantic to her new station on the U.S. Pacific coast, participated in the Battle of Manila Bay. During the subsequent Manila blockade, her services as a dispatch vessel and gunboat were invaluable to Admiral Dewey.
