Springfield, a 287 gross ton river passenger steamer, was built at Wilmington, Delaware, in 1901. She was chartered by the Navy sometime after April 1918, placed in commission as USS Springfield (ID # 2575), and employed transporting freight for the Philadelphia Navy Yard. With the need for her services eliminated by the end of the World War I emergency, she was returned to her owner in March 1919.
