Tech III, a 50-foot motor boat, was built in 1916 at Atlantic City, New Jersey, as a privately-owned pleasure craft. She was leased to the Navy in August 1917 for World War I service, placed in commission as USS Tech III (SP-1055) and assigned to duty with the 4th Naval District. Though described as "Very fast and desirable boat for general use", she apparently proved unsatisfactory. Tech III was decommissioned in mid-October 1917 and ordered returned to her owner "when repaired", which appears to have taken place in about mid-1918.
