USS Twining, a 2050-ton Fletcher class destroyer built at San Francisco, California, was commissioned in December 1943. She served in the Pacific through the rest of World War II. Following gunfire support service in the Marianas campaign during June and July 1944, Twining joined the fast carrier task forces and took part in their many activities up to the Japanese surrender in August 1945. Thereafter, she supported the occupation of Japan and participated in routine operations until decommissioned in June 1946.

During the later 1940s Twining was used as a Naval Reserve training ship in the eastern Pacific and was placed back in full commission in June 1950. She twice deployed for Korean war service in 1951-53. Following that conflict, Twining remained active in the Pacific and Asian areas until 1964, when she again became a Naval Reserve training ship. She was decommissioned in July 1971 and transferred to the navy of Taiwan, renamed Kwei Yang. Subsequently modernized, the old destroyer is still in service with the Taiwanese fleet.
