The year 1942 saw the Canadian Army expand to its peak during the war. Early in 1942, the 4th Canadian Infantry Division was converted to 4th Canadian Armoured Division and 2nd Canadian Army Tank Brigade. Japan's entry into the war on December 7, 1941 caused the expansion of home defence formations. Additional units were mobilized for coast defence along with three home defence divisions: 6th, 7th and 8th Canadian Infantry Divisions.

It initially consisted of 16th, 17th, and 18th Canadian Infantry Brigades. 8th Canadian Infantry Division unit's were also raised on 18 March 1942 and the HQ was raised on 12 May 1942 at Prince George, BC. In July 1942, these three divisions were reorganized so that 6th Canadian Infantry Division consisted of 13th, 18th and 19th Infantry Brigades; 7th Canadian Infantry Divison consisted of 15th, 17th and 20th Canadian Infantry Brigades; and 8th Canadian Infantry Division consisted of 14th and 16th Canadian Infantry Brigades. 21st Canadian Infantry Brigade would remain at Valcartier, PQ as a strategic reserve. |
