Roster of Company B 12th Georgia Battalion

This company was originally part of Company D which was split, in December 1862, into two companies, forming Company B commanded by Capt. John W. Rudisill, and Company E commanded by Capt. J. J. Newsome. Names preceded by a * indicate that the individual was a member of Company D prior to the split, and that no record exist for him after the split. This company was made up of men from the Washington County area.




Amason H.J., Pvt, Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Present thru 8/64. 1850 Census list Hiram I. Amerson age 13 living Washington Co in the household of John Amerson.

Anderson William S., Pvt. Enlisted 2/25/63, Savannah, wounded Ceder Creek 10/19/64. 1850 Census list William S. Anderson age 21 living Washington Co in the household of Ally Anderson.

Arneau James M., Cpl., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Present 2/63. RCS Also served in Ramsey's 1st. GA Co. E, 1861. Confederate Military History Vol. VII pg 474 list James as one of 5 brothers who served in the Confederate Army. The others were Francis, William, Michael, and Robert. They were sons of Michael Arneau of Florida, and Mary A. Culbert Arneau of Charleston, SC.

Avant George L., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Wounded 9/19/64 Winchester. 1850 Census list George L. Avant age 10 living Washington Co in the household of Barbary Avant. In the same household, Hardy H. and William A. Avant. 1870 Census list George L. Avant living Washington Co GA age 28. PR Applied Washington Co. 4/13/00. Born 12/15/38 in Washington Co. Living Oconee, GA. A farmer, supported by labor of his children. He has a wife and 2 orphan grandchildren. He was wounded in the right Shoulder at Winchester, leaving right arm weak. Witness B.S. Boatright stated that George served until the surrender. Witness Capt. George W. Peacock stated that he was in command of Co. E at the Battle of Winchester, and he knows that G.L. Avant was wounded and sent to the hospital at Lynchburg, VA. He also states that on 10/24/64 he received a furlough to go home from Lynchburg, and that he and the applicant, G.L. Avant got on the same train toward GA. Later Peacock received orders to carry all furloughed soldiers in Washington Co. belonging to the Army of Northern VA back to their commands. At that time, G.L. Avant's physical condition was such that he could not travel. His furlough was extended several times, and he was at home at the time of the surrender. In 1913 Avant applied for pension due to total blindness.

In the same household, George L. and William A. Avant. 1870 Census list Hardy H. Avant living Washington Co GA age 39.

Avant James R., Pvt., Enlisted 9/26/63, Decatur, Wounded 10/19/64 Ceder Creek. 1850 Census list James R. Avant age 24 living Washington Co. PR Widow Crissie C. (Lucretia) Avant applied Washington Co. 4/1/91. She had been a resident of GA since birth.They married 1848. She stated that James contracted Consumption as a result of his wound, and died 4/30/74, having been a hale and hardy man when he enlisted. Witness' G.L. Avant, W.H. Avant,and M.G. Wood Sen. all of Washington Co. stated that they were James neighbors before the war, during the war, and since the war, and that they served with him in the 12th GA Battalion, and were with him when he died at home. Her pension application was turned down initially due to a lack of proof that the Consumption actually resulted from the wound. A physician stated that J.R. Avant was suffering from the effects of the wound that he received 10/64 and in the early stage of Consumption in 1865. A Mrs. Eliza Hodges stated that she had known the parents and the grandparents of J.R. Avant for over 60 years and know of no case of Consumption in the family. Pension was allowed. Crissie movedto Oconee Co. in 1892, and back to Washington Co. in 1893. In 1907 she requested that her pension be remitted to W.H. Avant. James Ransome Avant buried Avant-Cox-Pierce Family Cemetery Washington County.

In the same household, George L. and Hardy H. Avant. 1870 Census list William H. Avant living Washington Co GA age 30. William H. Avant buried Avant Plantation Cemetery Washington County.

Barber James, Pvt., Enlisted 6/23/63, Sandersville, Wounded 3/25/65 Fort Stedman, Surrendered 4/9/65 Appomattox. 1850 Census list James Barber age 7 living in the household of Thomas Barber.

Barksdale William D., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Sandersville, Wounded Winchester, VA 9/19/64, Captured Fort Stedman, near Petersburg 3/25/65, Sent to Point Lookout MD POW Camp, Released 6/24/65. PR Applied Washington Co. 9/13/04. Born 7/25/35 Abbeville Dist. SC. A resident of GA since 1856. A farmer with a wife age 59, and 3 children, 2 sons ages 35 & 24, 1 daughter age 22. He served as superintendent of county Poor Farm. Witness George W. Peacock was in command of Co. E, and was present at the surrender, and further stated that he had known the applicant since 1857. The witness stated that the applicant was captured 3/25/65. W.D. Barksdale applied in Chatham Co. 9/5/08. Witness in 1908 was W.K.Ward of D Co. 12th GA also of Savannah who was also at Point Lookout POW camp at wars end. William is buried Bay Springs Methodist Church Cemetery Washington County.

Barnes Adaulfus A., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Surrendered at Appomattox with Gen. Lee. 1850 Census list Alfred Barnes age 8 living Washington Co in the household of David H. Barnes, a brick mason. In the same household, John Barnes. PR Widow applied Washington Co. 9/3/10. She was born GA 1848. A.A. Barnes married Sarah F. Cary 12/6/68 in Washington Co. He died Washington Co. 7/85. She stated that her husband was present at the surrender. Witness J.A. Robson was wounded 2/6/65 and stated that Barnes was present when he left the command wounded. Sarah died 3/14/27.

Barwick Jesse Andrew Jackson, Pvt., Enlisted 9/26/63, Decatur, Conscript, Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65 with Gen Lee. 1850 Census list Jackson Barwick age 28 living Washington Co. with wife Nancy, son William, and daughter Elizabeth. 1870 Census list Jessee A. Barwick living Washington Co GA age 48. PR Widow applied Washington Co. 3/8/01. She was born 7/19/21 in Washington Co. Jesse was also born in Washington Co. Jesse married Nancy King 4/2/46 in Washington Co. He died 1/9/85 in Burke Co. She has married children, and goes from county to county visiting children and grandchildren. Witness W.E. Watkins was captured just before the surrender, and believes that the applicant was present at the surrender. Witness G.W. Hartley stated that Barwick was present at the surrender.

Brown applied Jefferson Co. 8/11/10. They married Washington Co. 8/14/51. She was a resident of GA all her life. James was wounded and captured at Frederick City, MD (Monocacy), and sent to Point Lookout, MD POW Camp. He died 2/17/84 in Jefferson Co. Witness J.K. Kinman saw Brown wounded. Kinman was also captured and sent to Fort Delaware.

RCS Took Oath of Allegiance to U.S. Government at Point Lookout, and was released upon joining U.S. Army. Also served in Co. E Ramsey's 1st. GA in 1861.

Mary applied for pension in Lowndes Co. 10/5/23. R. Cullen Cox is buried Antioch Christian Church Cemetery Washington County.

Janie Clark in Jefferson Co. 1/19/85. Thomas died 10/23/17 in Warren Co. She lived with her Son D. Clark Cumming after her husband died. They lived in Jefferson Co., Warren Co., Bibb Co., N. Augusta, SC, and Muscogee Co. T.J. Cumming was home in Jefferson Co. at the time of the surrender, having been wounded and captured at Winchester, sent to the hospital at Baltimore, MD, and sent to Pt. Lookout for exchange. Davis age 26 living Washington Co. PR Widow Thenia W. applied Fulton Co. 3/25/07. She was born 1835 in Meriwether Co. and lived in GA all her life, except for about 10 years prior to her marriage. Charles was born 1/1/43 in Washington Co. They married 5/12/62. He died 2/18/88 in Washington Co. Charles was wounded in Battle before Petersburg, and was captured at hospital at Petersburg. At the time of her application, she was almost blind,living with her children. She had 2 children, a married daughter in AL, son in law a railroad agent, and a son working in Atlanta.

Discharged 1863 by furnishing a substitute. Witness W.H. Avant. A. Wash Jackson buried Old City Cemetery, Sandersville, GA, 11/15/28 - 7/31/98.

Jones E.W., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Captured 9/19/64 Winchester, VA, Exchanged 11/1/64, Captured near Petersburg, VA 3/25/65, Sent to Point Lookout POW Camp, Released 6/28/65. PR Applied Taliaferro Co. 1/8/97. Born 5/16/46 Taliaferro Co. A farmer with a wife and 3 children who support themselves. His health was bad due to a tree falling on him. He stated that he enlisted 5/62 at Sandersville, and was discharged at Point Lookout POW camp after the surrender. Witness J.A. Herfle of Hancock Co. confirms applicants information. E.W. Jones died 5/9/27 in Taliaferro Co.

Jordan Elisha W., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Died at #13CRR 5/26/63. Book Washington Co Newspaper Clippings Vol 1 statesthat Jordan died on the train enroute home on sick leave, and that he left a young wife. 1850 Census list Elisha W. Jordan age 33 head of household, living Washington Co.

Jordan James P., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Captured Fisher's Hill 9/22/64, Exchanged 2/13/65, Paroled Augusta 5/19/65. 1850 Census list James P. Jordan age 14 living Washington Co in the household of John Jordan. PR Widow Ruth Harrison applied Johnson Co. 3/17/27. Miss. Ruth Ann Rogers married James P. Jordan 12/16/58 in Washington Co. She was a resident of GA all her life. James was a POW at Point Lookout POW Camp. He was received at Cox's landing James River for exchange 2/14-15/65. James died 8/30/80 in Washington Co. After his death, Ruth married W.H. Harrison according to witness L. Davis. N.M. Jordan was present at James and Ruth's marriage. Witness M.E. Rogers of Travis Co. Texas was present at the marriage also. He was in the same command as James, but in E Co. Rogers was on parole at Jefferson Co. GA at the time of the surrender awaiting exchange. James was also on parole at Jefferson Co. at the same time.

Jordan age 4 living Washington Co in the household of Cornelius Jordan. In the same household, Stephen T. Jordan. PR Applied Washington Co. 5/19/92. A residentof GA since birth. Wounded 6/2/64 Cold Harbor, shot through left Knee, shattering knee bone, cutting leaders, and disabling Leg. 3 witness' L.D. Newsome, J.W. Layton, and W.E. Clark confirm statement.

Jordan S.T., Pvt., Enlisted 6/1/62, Sandersville, Transferred from Capt. Martin's Co in exchange for J.P. Smith 2/63, 11/5/64 listed as present, last entry. 1850 Census list Stephen T. Jordan age 8 living Washington Co in the household of Cornelius Jordan. In the same household, Nathan H. Jordan. PR Widow Mrs. M.L. Jordan applied 10/11 in Lee Co. They married 4/25/67 at Davisboro, Washington Co. GA. She was a resident of GA all her life. S.T. Jordan died 11/12/02 at Dawson, Terrell Co. GA. Jordan served first in Ramsey's 1st GA, Howell's Battery, and the 12th GA Battalion. She stated that he had been home on sick leave, but was in Augusta on his way back to the command at the time of the surrender. He had left the command in VA with chronic diarrhea. Witness J.A. Robson of Washington Co. stated that Jordan enlisted at Savannah in the Spring of 1863, and that he (the witness) had left the command wounded 2/6/65, and that Jordan was with the command when he left.

Jordan. 1870 Census list William J. Jordan age 38 living Washington Co. PR Applied Richmond Co. 4/15/02. Born Stewart Co. 12/19/32. A farmer and mill hand, has a wife who is blind, and 2 daughters who support the family. W.J. Jordan served first in Ramsey's 1st. GA for 1 year. Served in 12th GA until surrender. Witness L.D. Newsome of Washington Co. had known applicant for 48 years. They were in the same battalion, but different companies, both were present at the surrender. There were few at the last. RCS Served first in Co. ERamsey's 1st. GA and briefly in Co. E 32ed GA before joining the 12th GA Battalion.

Kittridge Edwin T., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, 4/1/63 transferred from Co E in exchange for W.H. Fulgham, Detached to Government Works at Sandersville and Macon as a mechanic unfit for field service 4/13/63 - 11/1/64, last entry.

He stated that he was captured in the Spring of 1865 on the retreat from Petersburg, VA near Farmville, VA. 3 days before the surrender. He was a prisoner at the time of the surrender. Physician stated that the applicant's sight and hearing impaired due to bomb bursting close to him in the war. Witness J.A. B. 1850Census list Jasper M. Stubbs age 15 living Washington Co. in the household of Gabriel W. Stubbs. In same household, Edwin E. Stubbs.(E Co.) PR Applied Washington Co. 4/21/00. Born 11/35 in GA. Stubbs served in 1st GA as well as 12th GA. He stated that he was wounded in the right Shoulder by a minnie ball at Frederick City, MD 9/17/62. (The date is far from correct, but he probably is referring to Monocacy, on the date which he list, the company was on picket duty at Big Creek Gap in TN) Witness J.A. Robson agreed with the date and the location of applicant's wound. Witness I. Herman served with applicant in 1st GA. Witness W.G. Knight stated that they both served in 1st GA and 12th GA and that applicant served until the surrender. Physician statement confirms wound to right Shoulder. Stubbs was a witness for R.J. Moye 1903. RCS Served in Co. E Ramsey's 1st. GA.

Born 8/15/19 Washington Co. 78 years of age, a farmer with a wife, they are supported by friends. Stated that he was present at the surrender. Confirmed by witness I.M. Hartley. Living Johnson Co.1907.

Taylor John D., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Sandersville, Carpenter, Detached to Fort Johnson to work on magazine 10/63 - 4/64, Captured and paroled Farmville, VA 4/65. PR Widow applied Laurens Co. 10/16/19. She was a GA resident all her life. John Taylor married Amanda Melvina Moye 8/13/61 in Washington Co. He died in Laurens Co. in 1896. She stated that he was captured by the enemy at Richmond, VA and released after the surrender. Witness B.S. Boatright of Washington Co. stated that he had known Amanda Taylor all his life, and that he believed that John Taylor was captured after he, the witness, was wounded 2/65.

Turner M.D., Pvt., Enlisted 12/17/62, Sandersville, Wounded Fort Sumter 1863, Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65. PR Applied Hancock Co. 2/4/98. Born 5/30/24 Baldwin Co. Enlisted 12/62 at Savannah,and served until the end of the war. A farmer with a wife and 4 children. Witness W.E. Watkins of Washington Co. stated that he had known Turner for 40 odd years, and he served through out the war, a faithful soldier until the surrender. He moved from Washington Co. a few years ago to Hancock Co. Alive 1907.

Tyson Thomas J., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Sandersville, In hospital at Dalton, GA 7/31/62 - 8/7/62 with gonorrhea, Wounded in back at Fort Sumter 1863, Wounded Fisher's Hill 9/22/64, Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65. PR Widow Mary J. Tison applied Washington Co.8/8/10. She had been a resident of GA all her life. Thomas J. Tyson married Jane Reynolds 11/2/65 in Washington Co. He died at Tennille, GA 1900. She stated that her husband served first in the 1st GA and latter in Rudisill's Artillery, and that he was present at the surrender. Witness B.S. Boatright stated that Tyson was present when he (the witness) was wounded 2/5/65. RCS Served in Co. E Ramsey's 1st. GA. Thomas Irvine Tyson buried Zeta Cemetery, Tennille, GA, 1830 - 1900.

Also listed as receiving 30 day furlough 3/18/65 Richmond, VA. 1850 Census list Franklin Underwood age 4 living Washington Co in the household of James Underwood. In the same household, Joseph and Joshua Underwood. PR Applied Emanuel Co. 9/5/12, age 62, resident of GA all of life. At home on 30 day furlough at Wars end. Witness D.R. Underwood member of same Company, known H.F. all of life, since 1850. D.R. Underwood stated that he was present at surrender, and H.F. was on furlough. H.F. died 12/15/19 at Scott GA, in Johnson Co. Widow applied Bibb Co. She was age 57, born 6/9/80, in GA. H.F. Underwood married Mrs. Elizabeth Price 7/27/02 in Emanuel Co.

Underwood John T., Pvt., Enlisted 9/29/63, Decatur, Conscript, In hospital at Charlottesville 8/17/64 - 8/27/64 with anthrax, Given 30 day furlough. PR Applied Johnson Co. 4/3/95. Born GA several birth dates given 1824-1832. A farmer supported by children, has a wife but no children living at home. 2 boys and 3 girls all married ages boy 49, 47, 44, boy 40, and 35. Enlisted 14th GA and served 6 months, discharged due to Rheumatism, could not walk. Joined 12th GA, discharged by surrender. Witness I.M. Hartley stated that Underwood joined at James Island in 1863, and performed military service until surrender.

Underwood R., Pvt., Enlisted 8/15/64, Martinsburg, VA, Wounded Fisher's Hill 9/22/64, Absent 11/5/64 due to wound, last entry. PR D.R. Underwood was a witness for H.F. Underwood in 1912. D.R. stated that he was present at the surrender. He also stated that he had known H.F. all his life since 1850. D.R. is not listed in the 1850 Census in Washington Co. D.R. Underwood applied Johnson Co. 8/30/02. Born Johnson Co. 8/18/44. A farmer with a wife. Enlisted James Island 1863, was present at the surrender. Shot through both thighs, minnie ball still in right thigh. Witness A.S. Barnes of Johnson Co. was at home wounded atthe time of surrender, had been away from the command about a month, D.R. Underwood was present. J.K. Kinman was also a witness. D.R. died 1/6/14 in Washington Co. He left no widow. R.L. Underwood applied for benefits due deceased pensioner.

Watkins Lafayette W., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Sandersville, Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65. 1850 Census list Layfaett Watkins age 13 living Washington Co in the house hold of Mitchel Watkins. In the same household, William, Mitchel, and Marion Watkins. PR Widow applied Washington Co. 9/23/09. Lafayette married Miss. Mary E. Mills in Washington Co. 11/28/58. She was born in Washington Co. 1838. Lafayette was born in Washington Co. 1836. He died in Warthen, Washington Co. 1898. She stated that she had no family. Witness L.D. Newsome confirmed that Lafayette was present at the surrender. J.A. Robson was also a witness. Buried Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Warthen, GA, 6/22/36-1/21/98.

Watkins William E., Sgt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Sandersville, Promoted 2/63, Captured Fort Stedman near Petersburg 3/25/65, Released from Point Lookout POW Camp 6/21/65. 1850 Census list William Watkins age 9 living Washington Co in the household of Mitchel Watkins. In the same household, Layfaett, Mitchel, and Marion Watkins. PR Applied Washington Co. 8/7/07. Living Tennille, GA. He was born Washington Co. 5/41. He was a merchant and a farmer. His wife suffers from a broken Ankle. He served first in Ramsey's 1st. GA. RCS 1st. GA Co. E. Witness R.C. Cox, who was present at the surrender, confirms applicant's capture a few days before the surrender. Witness for R.G. Pope 1879, he stated that he was Ord. Sgt. for company.

Rudolph 10/3/78 in Whitfield Co. She was a resident of GA all her life. He died 11/2/88 in Whitfield Co. Witness Mary T. Wheeler stated that Thomas was discharged 4/12/63 by furnishing a substitute.

PR Widow applied Johnson Co. 3/8/01. She was born 1838 in Johnson Co. He was born 1827 in Baker Co. GA. Francis married Mary Ann Jerrell 1859. He died 1890 in Washington Co. She stated that he enlisted in Savannah in 1863, and that he was captured a few days before surrender, in prison at time of surrender. Witness D.R. Underwoodstated that he (the witness) was present at the surrender and that the applicant was in a Yankee Prison taken captive a few days before surrender. William Howell was also a witness.

Wood age 21 living Washington Co in the household of Elizabeth N. Daniel. In same household, Jarred H. Wood. PR A letter dated 5/9/04 from Washington Co. Ord. M. Newman to J.P. Leverett telling him that Mizell G. Wood is confined to bed and has been for some time. Leverett had apparently wanted Wood as a witness.
