Roster of Company E 12th Georgia Battalion

This company was made up of men from the Washington County area. These men were part of Capt. Rudisell's Company prior to the reorganization of December 1862. At that time, Rudisell?s Company was split into two companies, B & E.



Amason John Q. Pvt, Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Present thru 4/63. 1850 Census list John Q.C. Amerson age 16 living Washington Co. in the household of John Amerson. PR Applied Johnson Co. 9/15/04. Born Washington Co. 2/7/33. A farmer supported by help of wife and grown children. Have 4 children (at home) 3 girls 13, 12, and 11, 1 boy 10. Stated that he served in the 12th GA Battalion 3/62 - 5/63. Paid a substitute and came home. Enlisted into 3ed GA Reg. 7/64. Was with 3ed GA when it surrendered at Augusta, GA. Buried Bethelem Baptist Church, Warthen, GA 1828 - 1905.


Arline Thomas J., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Died of sickness at Hospital in Charleston 5/29/64, Buried Magnolia Cemetery row 9 grave 60 Charleston, SC. Interment records list burial 5/28/63, died of Typhoid Pneumonia at hospital.

Armstrong John S., Pvt., Enlisted 8/15/63, Fort McAllister, Wounded Battle of Newtown VA 8/11/64.

Ashley William T., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Sandersville, Captured 3/25/65 Fort Stedman near Petersburg, VA, Released Point Lookout POW Camp 6/22/65. PR Applied Worth Co. 7/3/05. Born 12/8/35 in GA. A farmer with a wife age 65 and a daughter age 35. He stated that he was captured 3/25/65. Witness B.S. Boatright stated that Ashley had lived in Washington Co. until late 1890's. Boatright also stated that other members of the company had informed him of Ashley's capture, Boatright had been wounded prior to Ashley's capture. Ashley applied to have his pension transferred to Turner Co. 1/17/06.

Barksdale John Benjamin, Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Present at muster 11/1/64, last record. PR Applied Hancock Co. 1/25/00. Born Warren Co. 2/8/40. Lost left eye when struck by small shell fragment or cap at the Battle of Monocacy 7/5/64.(incorrect date) A farmer with a wife and 4 children, supported by his children. Witness' James O.B. Jones of Hancock Co. and T.E. Gibson of Fulton Co. confirm information given by John. Another witness was E.W. Jones of Taliferro Co. Thomas and Gibson stated that both they and John Barksdale were present at the surrender. In 1902, John stated that he had a wife and 3 children, a girl 12 and 2 boys age 16 & 18. In 1905 he stated that he had a wife and a daughter age 15, and a blind son age 22. 1905 witness was Burrell W. Veal of Washington Co. who stated that they were both present at the surrender, in different companies. Barksdale was turned down for a pension in 1900, 1901, 1902, and reapplied in 1905.

Barnes Alfred Suspense, Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Transferred to 28th GA in exchange for B.A. Moye 2/6/63. 1850 Census list Alfred Barnes age 8 living Washington Co. in the household of David H. Barnes, a brick mason. PR Applied Johnson Co. 4/25/99. Born 7/28/40 in Washington Co. He stated that he served first in the 1st GA, and later joined the 28th GA in VA. Witness former Capt. J.D. Franklin of the 28th GA stated that Barnes was wounded in the Head, Leg, and Buttocks. Barnes stated that he had 2 grown boys. A.S. Barnes died 4/4/20 in Johnson Co. Widow Mary L. Barnes applied 7/10/20 in Johnson Co. They married 2/15/66 in Washington Co. She died 10/2/35 in Johnson Co. Buried Westview Cemetery Wrightsville, GA. RCS Served in E Co Ramsey's 1st. GA in 1861.

Barwick William B., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Transferred to Martin's Battery 2/19/63, exchange for A. Walker. 1870 Census list William B. Barwick living Washington Co., GA age 35. PR Applied Washington Co. 5/15/01. Born 1835 in Washington Co. He stated that he had a wife and a son and daughter. Also stated that he enlisted 3/61 into 1st GA, and served 12 months, and enlisted into 12th GA Battalion. He later transferred into Martin's Battery. Thomas Brooks of Martin's Battery was applicant's witness. RCS Served in Co. E Ramsey's 1st. GA in 1861. Buried Old City Cemetery, Sandersville, GA.

Bland William Freeman, Pvt., Enlisted 9/26/63, Decatur, Concript, Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65 with Gen. Lee. 1850 Census list 2 William F. Blands in Washington Co. PR Widow Mary E. Bland applied Washington Co. 5/19/91. They married 9/19/54. She had been a resident of GA since birth. Witness' were A.F. Hicklin, L.D. Newsome, and W.G. Robson. The witness' and Mary stated that Bland died 5/12/65 in Fairfield, SC of Typhoid Dysentery, which was contracted while in service. He was traveling home from the surrender at Appomattox. The witness' also stated that W.F. Bland was buried at Fairfield. Mary died in Washington Co. 2/4/14.

Boatright Benjamin Sessions, 2Lt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Promoted 2Lt. 1/19/63, In command of Co. B after 10/19/64, Wounded rt. thigh 2/5/65 Hatchers Run, Captured Jackson Hospital Richmond 4/3/65. History of Washington Co., GA list Benjamin as born 1842 and married Mellissa Veal, and that he carried a Union bullet in his body for life. 1850 Census list Benjamin Boatright age 8 living Washington Co. in the household of George E. Boatright. PR Applied Washington Co. 9/9/08. Born 7/26/42 in GA. Enlisted 1st GA 3/18/61, and served in that unit for 12 months. Shot in right Thigh above Knee Joint at Hatcher's Run 2/5/65. Sent to the hospital at Richmond, VA. Taken prisoner at hospital, remained at hospital until 5/1/65. Witness' W.E. Watkins, L.D. Newsome, J.N. Garner, and J.A. Robson all confirmed information, and stated that they were neighbors. Newsome and Garner were present at the surrender. Robson was in the hospital wounded, and Watkins was at Point Lookout POW camp at the time of the surrender. B.S. Boatright died at Tennille, GA in Washington Co. 12/28/20. Widow applied for pension due deceased soldier at Washington Co. 12/17/21. B.S. Boatright married Miss. Melissa P. Veal in Washington Co. 11/11/66. Her witness was J. Jackson, who was wounded at Winchester, VA. RCS Served in E Co. Ramsey's 1st. GA in 1861. CV Vol. XXIX pg 186 states that Boatright was the son of George E. and Elizabeth Sessions Boatright, that he was a successful farmer, and that he and Malissa had 2 sons and 7 daughters. Buried Zeta Cemetery, Tennille, GA, 7/26/42 - 12/20/20 also on marker: Entered Confederate service 3/18/61, Co. E 1st GA Reg. Made Sgt Co. B 12th GA Bat 5/2/62, Made Lt Co. E 3/63, Made Capt Co. B 11/64, plus other information. Malissa 12/8/45-3/21/32.

Boatright, George W., Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Wounded 7/9/64 Monocacy MD, Died Frederick MD 7/12/64, Buried Mt. Olivet Cemetery Frederick. 1850 Census list George Boatright age 13 living Washington Co. in the household of Edmund Boatright.

Brady Daniel R., Pvt., Enlisted 2/1/63, Savannah, Died 8/2/64 of Typhoid Fever Staunton, VA. 1850 Census list Daniel Brady age 23, born N.C., living Washington Co. in the household of John Brady. PR Widow Mary applied Washington Co. 4/20/91. She had been a resident of GA all her life. They married 3/27/55. She stated that Daniel died at Jackson Hospital at Richmond, VA about the end of 7/64. 3 witness' from Johnson Co., W.H. Heath, D.R. Underwood, and J.P.D. Oliver all stated that Brady was first attacked with chronic Diarrhea, and afterward Typhoid Fever at Fort McAllister, and that he was taken to the hospital at Savannah. He was later carried from that hospital to Jackson Hospital at Richmond, where he died.

Braswell William M., Pvt., Enlisted 9/26/63, Fort McAllister, Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65 with Gen. Lee. PR Widow applied Washington Co. 6/7/02. She was born 1832 in Washington Co. He was born 1830 in Washington Co. W.M. Braswell married Adeline Cox 1852 in Washington Co. He died in Washington Co. 1872. She stated that she had 1 son, and lived with him. Witness R.C. Cox stated that Braswell served first in the state militia before enlisting into the 12th GA Battalion, and that both he and Braswell were present at the surrender. Adeline applied to have her pension transferred from Montgomery Co. to Wheeler Co. She gave power of attorney to J.E. Braswell of Montgomery Co. She died in Montgomery Co. 2/6/18.

A resident of GA since birth. Shot right Ankle 9/19/64 Winchester, shattering the bone. Commissioned Officer's Affidavit by B.S. Boatright. Applied again 3/20/93. Witness' in 1893 G.W. Peacock, G.W. Wounded left Arm above Elbow at Frederick City,(Monocacy) MD 7/9/64, sent to Point Lookout POW camp. Wound never healed. Witness J.A. Robson was present when applicant was wounded. RCS list Cason as sent to West Building Hospital Baltimore, MD and afterward to Point Lookout prior to exchange, and also sent to Point Lookout for a second time after capture 3/25/65. 1850 Census list William Cason age 17 living Washington Co. in the household of Dennis Cason. In same household, Able Cason. PR Applied in Bullock Co. 1/5/00, residence Statesboro, GA. Also served in 1st GA. Released from Point Lookout, MD POW Camp after war. Born Washington Co., GA 4/22/32 or 4/27/33. Moved from Washington Co. to Bullock Co. in 1895. Farmer with wife and 3 children oldest 11, youngest 5. Witness for J.H. Smith in 1901, stated that they were mess mates. RCS Served in E Co. Ramsey's 1st. GA in 1861.

PR Applied Washington Co. 6/15/01. Born Washington Co. 10/7/32. A farmer with a wife, supported by the help of his children. Cato stated that he had been on furlough and was in Augusta on the way back to VA at the time of the surrender. Witness W.G. Knight of Co. B, stated that the applicant received a furlough from Capt. Newsome 2/65. The witness was there at the time.

GA age 27. PR Widow applied Washington Co. 9/30/10. R.F. Chapman married Appie Rachels 3/22/66 in Washington Co. He died 10/90 in Washington Co. Her children support her. Witness L.D. Newsome stated that both he and Chapman were present at the surrender.

PR Applied Emanuel Co. 4/12/95. Born 3/13/20 in Jefferson Co. A farmer with a wife and 2 boys ages 45 & 50, and a girl age 53. He stated that he was supported by his son in law and by his children. He stated that he was captured 7/64 and exchanged 11/64, and was unable to return to his command due to sickness. Witness Joseph H. Fulgham, his Son in law. Clark transferred to Montgomery Co. 1897, living with son in law. He listed his occupation as fish netts.

PR Widow Fannie applied Emanuel Co. 10/29/12, they married 1/13/60 in Washington Co. She stated that Curry was home on sick furlough at the time of the surrender, and that he left the command near Petersburg. She stated that he died 2/75 in Washington Co. Witness B.S. Boatright stated that Curry left command late 1864 or early 1865, prior to the witness' being wounded in 2/65.

She stated that John had been left on the roadside in MD unable to march, and has never been heard from since. He had been sick ere the march began and was sick on the march. 3 witness' W.H. PR Applied Laurens Co. 3/16/99. Born in GA 5/4/26. A farmer with a wife and 2 children. States that he is supported by his children. Stated that he served until surrendered with Gen. Lee, paroled and sent home. Information confirmed by witness W.H. Heath of Johnson Co. Durden was living in Laurens Co. in 1906.

Eubanks John J., Pvt., Enlisted 2/1/63, Savannah, Substitute for W. A. Joyner, 12/31/63 listed as present, Discharged due to disability. 1870 Census list John J. Eubanks age 53 living Washington Co. PR Widow applied Richmond Co. 9/23/09. She, a GA resident since her birth 2/28 in Taliaferro Co. John was born 1818. John Eubanks married Louisa Reynolds 7/3/42 in Taliaferro Co. He died 2/27/87 at Augusta GA. She stated that John served in the 12th GA Battalion about 18 months, and that he was at home at wars end due to being wounded, and unfit for duty. Witness' G.W. Peacock and F.M. Stubbs, Peacock stated that he had actually enlisted Eubanks into the 12th GA, and that Eubanks had left the command wounded during the Winter of 1864 near Petersburg by authority of the commanding officer.

Eubanks Thomas B., Pvt., Enlisted 9/26/63, Decatur, Conscript, Killed 7/9/64 Monocacy, MD. PR Widow Sarah A. Eubanks applied Washington Co. 4/2/91. She had been a resident of GA since birth. She stated that Thomas had been killed at the Battle of Monocacy by a ball passing through his head. 3 witness' J.N. Garner, W.V. Tanner, and W.E. Watkins all confirmed Sarah's statement.

A resident of GA since 1858. Captured between Martinsburg and Winchester 9/18/64, and sent to Point Lookout, MD POW camp. James was a farmer with no family, his son died in 1902. Witness J.H. PR Widow applied 8/29/10, she was a resident of GA all her life, 68 years. Joseph H. Fulghum married Penny Clark 9/21/65 in Washington Co. Fulghum died 2/17/08 at Higgeston, GA. Witness B.S. Boatright stated that Fulghum served in the 1st GA and in B Co. latter E Co. 12th GA. Witness J.E. Clark was present at Joseph H. Fulghum and Penny J. Clark's wedding. RCS Served in E Co. Ramsey's 1st. GA in 1861.

Kittridge, Hospital Steward detached to Sandersville through out War. 1850 Census list William H. Fulgam age 9 living Washington Co in the household of John G. Fulgam. In same household, Joseph Harrison Fulgam and Jesse M. Fulgam. 1870 Census list William H. Fulghum age 29 living Washington Co. PR Applied Washington Co. 10/9/19. A resident of GA all his life. He stated that he left the command the latter part of 1862 while in route from TN to the GA coast. He was detailed to the Gov. Shops at Sandersville to make saddles. He remained in shops until Sherman's Army came through and burned the shop 11/64. Was in Sandersville at the time of the surrender. Witness B.S. Boatright confirmed Fulghum's statement. W.H. Fulghum died 10/28/20 Riddleville, Washington Co. GA. Widow, Nettie, applied for pension due deceased soldier in Washington Co. 12/4/20. W.H. Fulghum married Miss. Florida Annette Davis in Washington Co. 3/20/11. She was born 7/13/74 in GA. She applied Washington Co. 7/24/37.

Garner Jasper Newton, Pvt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Sandersville, Appointed Cpl., Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65 with Gen. Lee. 1850 Census list Jasper N. Garner age 12 living Washington Co in the household of Joshua J. Garner. In same household, Alexander G. Garner. PR Applied Hancock Co. 11/2/10. Resident of GA all his life, since 1838. Hall E.J., Pvt., Enlisted 4/4/62, Charleston, SC, Transferred from 27th SC Inf. 6/27/64, Captured Fort Stedman near Petersburg 3/25/65, Released Point Lookout, MD POW Camp 6/14/65. PR Applied Tattnall Co. 3/7/98. Born 10/4/30 in SC. A resident of GA about 40 years, about 4 years before marriage. A farmer with a wife and 4 children who are supported by their own labor. Enlisted into 22ed SC at Charleston in 1861, served about 3 years in that command, and was transferred to the 12th GA Battalion E Co. Served until close of war, and discharged at Point Lookout POW camp after the surrender. One witness was H.P. Woodard of Brian Co. and the 22ed SC. 1903 witness T.M. Parker of Effingham Co. served in 12th GA until close of war, and stated that Hall was captured 4/3/65.

Newsome stated that both he and the applicant were present at the surrender.

Hendrick Thomas A., Pvt., Enlisted 4/25/63, Fort McAllister, Wounded Monocacy, MD 7/9/64, Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65 with Gen. Lee. 1870 Census list Thomas Hendrick age 25 living Warren Co. PR Applied Taliaferro Co. 7/14/05. Born Taliaferro Co. 1/5/45. A farmer with a wife, Cossie, 63, Daughter Ella Hendricks 32 years of age. Witness G.W. Wheeler of Warren Co. stated that they were both present at the surrender. Applied to have pension transferred to Wilkes Co. 1907.
