Second brief war between Charles I of England and the Scots. Charles I summoned Parliament (The Short Parliament), in order to raise an army against the Scots. The Scots invaded northern England, won a battle at Newburn on the Tyne (28 August 1640), and occupied Northumberland and Durham. The war was ended by the Treaty of Ripon (26 October 1640), which forced Charles I to summon the Long Parliament, which in turn led to the English Civil War.
