1669: The island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea falls to the Ottoman Turks after a 21-year siege.

1864: A guerilla band led by William "Bloody Bill" Anderson sacks the town of Centralia, Missouri, killing 22 unarmed Union soldiers before massacring 120 pursuing Yankees.

1915: The German attacks at Eckau (Riga), Dvinsk and on Vilia and Niemen are repulsed.

1916: At Verdun the German strong attack at nightfall against Thiaumont-Fleury front is repulsed with great loss.
