GALLERY VIII - THE LONG ROAD TO PEACE

By 1968, direct US combat involvement in Vietnam had gone on for three years, and many in Congress were wearying of the apparent lack of progress in the war. Added to this was the widespread unrest in the nation at large, prompting the Johnson Administration to seek a road to peace with the North Vietnamese.

This gallery focuses on the period from 1968 to 1973 when negotiations were in progress to end the Vietnam War. The central exhibit will be a recreation of the negotiating table, with a complete and detailed explanation of the shape, seating arrangement, and the amount of time it took to arrive at just this minor agreement.

In contrast, there will be exhibits showing the continued combat operations at the same time the United States was beginning to disengage from the war. The start-and-stop progress to the peace talks, bombing halts and renewals, and the effects on American politics will be explored.
