Flag Day
Tomorrow, June 14, 2002, is National Flag Day. I hope everyone honors the flag and displays it proudly and properly. Our Flag has been the world's brightest beacon for over 200 years. It has welcomed people from all over this world to our shores, as they came in search of freedom and in persuit of their dreams.
No falg in the world flies as high or higher than that of the United States of America. It instills pride, as no other embelm can. It also instills both fear and respect like none other. Even our most bitter enemies both fear and respect it. They hate the freedoms it represents, while at the same time longing for those same freedoms. They respect the power it represents, while hating the fact that they know they will never be able to enjoy that same power. A power that comes not from forced subjection, but out of love and a willingness to sacrifice all, if need be, to preserve the freedoms that flag represents.
Our flag has survived the disgrace of being burned in protests, yet still commands the respect earned through the generousity of the nation it represents.
Our flag was born during the battle for independence, chistened with the blood of our forefathers and defended even today, 200 later, by the sons and daughters of this nation.
No other flag in history has stood for so much, while demanding so little of its people, yet so vehemantly defended.
Fly her high and proudly tomorrow, my brothers and sisters, for the world needs a hero today, more than ever.
