PREBELLUM:
October 1937 (Year of the Ox [Dinh Suu]): After a general strike, trade unions are banned and their militants are imprisoned. The Movement of the Indochinese Congress is dissolved, and pending legislation addressing labor demands is dropped. SECOND INDOCHINA WAR: October 10, 1965 (Year of the Snake [At Ti]) (US Defense): Operation Shiny Bayonet begins in the Suai Ca River valley near An Khe. A combined U.S.-South Vietnamese force attempts but fails to trap elements of the NVA 325th Infantry (Song Lo) Division. October 10, 1965 (Year of the Snake [At Ti]) (US Defense): Operation Iron Triangle update: B Company, 2/503rd Airborne, 173rd Airborne Brigade is ambushed in the Iron Triangle by a VC company. Eight Americans are KIA and 25 are WIA. October 10, 1966 (Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive Phase II): A/2/20 ARA support of the 22nd ARVN Division results in heavy losses to the Viet Cong. October 10, 1966 (Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive Phase II): Operation Canberra update: An SAS fighting patrol kills one VC and wounds another. October 10, 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): The HMAS Perth receives enemy fire. October 10, 1971 (Year of the Boar [Tan Hoi]) (US Consolidation I): The main body 2 Squadron SAS departs Nui Dat for Australia, the last SAS Squadron to serve in Vietnam. During its second tour in Vietnam 2 Squadron SAS has conducted 100 recon patrols and 67 fighting patrols. October 10, 1972 (Year of the Rat [Nham Ty]) (US Cease-Fire): Easter Offensive: US hunter killer operations begin on or around this time as North Vietnam increasingly uses the sea for infiltration and resupply, due to the renewed air war. POSTBELLUM: October 10, 1992 (Year of the Monkey {Nham Than]): Following assurance by the US of resettlement in the States, Montagnard, Cham and ethnic Khmer guerrillas of Vietnam's United Front Liberation of Oppressed Races (FULRO) in the central highlands, surrender to UN officials, ending their fight for autonomy. Note that TVW says the struggle went on for 28 years, thus apparently dating it back to the Montagnard uprising of 1964, but other sources go back as far as 1958, to a general strike called against the Diem government by the Bahnar, Jarai and Ede. |
