When a Wednesday evening has been spent learning about how to prolong cocoa after-tastes, avoid overwhelming levels of vegetable fats, and distinguish your 43% Venezuelans from an unforgiving 96% ebony, washed down with some confectionary-friendly tipples, it definitely constitutes a mid-week high. In more ways than one. After an evening with Cambridge Food Tour* discovering the art of chocolate tasting, we were left with a warm fuzzy feeling all over and a massive sugar rush!

Local food tour operator Gerla Pusey-de Boer specialises in foodie walking tours of Cambridge and truly indulgent tasting evenings such as the Sweeter than Chocolate wine and cocktail matching masterclass we went along to on April 17 at the City Hotel. Cambridge Food Tour teamed up with local independent chocolatier Chocolat Chocolat to guide a small group of dedicated chocoholics through the delicate matter of pairing booze with the many varieties of chocolate.

From the second we were ushered in by a welcoming Gerla and hit by the wave of tantalising aromas of melted chocolate, it was clear that a deep love of chocolate was going to be required. The entire room was utterly transfixed as chocolatier Isabelle talked us through the history of chocolate as we know it today – premium or otherwise – and the process of making the chocolate they sell at Chocolat Chocolat on St Andrew’s Street in the city centre.

We learned about minimum cocoa-solids content, single origins, least fattening chocolate types(!), and got some insider info on future chocolate trends (look out for liquorice and dark choc combo in the next few weeks!). We didn’t have to wait long for a taste of the good stuff either; Isabelle had us tasting, testing, guessing, and swapping notes on close to ten different chocolates. We got competitive during the quizzes – a first prize of a beautiful chocolate bouquet was up for grabs so can you blame us? – And surprised ourselves with new favourite flavour combinations (Masala chocolate, anyone?).

What we were really waiting for, however, was the all important lesson on what to drink with chocolate. Don’t judge us but we were ready to work our way through a good few tipples; from the usual partners of coffee and port to the more complex matches of wine and cocktails. When we thought they’d never arrive, we were finally treated to a lovely glass of white wine, a French Viognier better suited to a good fish dish than the recommended milk chocolate, and a deep red Malbec from Argentina that went down rather too quickly with a few bites of a rich dark Ugandan premium origin chocolate! Cocktails swiftly followed: a dark milk chocolate, milk-based raspberry martini that was so sweet and rich that we completely forgot about the piles of eating chocolate surrounding us; and a Green Surprise which was too close to an over-sweet Pina Colada for our liking. Considering that we practically rolled out of the door at the end of the evening, stuffed full of the best chocolate on offer in Cambridge, the ticket price was certainly justified although we had expected a few more drinks matches to feature in the line-up.

Overall it was a delicious and thoroughly enjoyable evening, rounded off nicely by a* discount voucher from the featured chocolate outlet and party-bag style doggie bags of leftover chocolate to continue the tasting at home. We’re saving our special samples for the next chocolate craving in about, ooh, five minutes’ time…
