The effort to dump California Gov. Gray Davis is charging ahead, but some Republicans want to leave him alone - not because he?s any good, but because he?s so rotten.

"The White House is much better off if Gray Davis is the governor in 2004," said Tim Morgan, a Republican National Committee member from California. "The president could more effectively campaign with a wounded Gray Davis as governor than with another Democrat."

Other conservatives worry that Arnold Schwarzenegger, Condoleezza Rice, Rep. Darrell Issa, Michael Reagan, George Deukmejian, Bill Simon, Pete Wilson, Larry Elder, Richard Riordan, Chris Cox or any Republican who replaced the ghastly guv would be the fall guy for his years of disastrous mismanagement and corruption.

No Republican presidential candidate has won California since 1988. ?The Bush-Cheney re-election team had been counting on the unpopularity of Mr. Davis to help change that,? the Washington Times reports.

The Times says a special election this fall to recall Davis ?appears inevitable.? The fallout, however, is a huge unknown.

Footnote: Some top California Dems are secretly urging Davis to resign before the recall petitions are certified next month, thus letting the Democrat lieutenant governor automatically succeed him and kill the recall drive. Will the power-lusting Davis have the guts to throw himself on this grenade?
