Default Radio Telephone Operator Gatewood

Mack carried the radio and could always been seen with that mike stuck to his ear.I took this photo when we had just moved up on a hill. The guy with the beret is Eric Andrews. The many years have made me forget the name of the guy who is getting up from the ground. This also was taken in early 1970.

Smile We have even bathed together

If we found a nice place to take a bath while out on patrol,we would put half the guys on guard and the other half would bath then swap places. The biggest drawback to that was you would have to put back on the same dirty uniforms But hey a bath is a bath. From the left with weapon(M-79 thumper)is Jerry Argo(NC),Steve Eidson(TN), ME with bag of M-79 rounds around waist, William Sadler(VA)Selah Montgomery(ARK) Mack Gatewood(TN) with soap on head.I have forgotten the name of guy in front deep in the water.I guess time does that to a fellow,I thought I would never ever forget these guys.I now kind of wonder who took this for me,who got left out.I'm sorry about the black spots on the photo but due to the fact I had to carry it for a couple of months until I got back to the rear to the PX,the film must have gotten wet(could have been the last creek we crossed or the RAIN everyday,I don't know)

Default Welcome

I recently returned here and got a great welcome. It's a great bunch top. Just listen to me about who the troublemakers are, I can brown-nose with the best of them.
Nice to see another Americal vet. We had 3/21 in the LZ Professional AO, at least a company of them. 1/46th vet here, medic.

Default Private First Class White Oak

Mack took this of me leaning against his radio somewhere along the trail, somewhere green, somewhere within range of mortars and arty, somewhere near LZ Center.Taken late 69 or early 70.I was 19 years old and pointman for Kelso Platoon Delta Company 3/21st.STANDARD model 12 gauge pump shotgun,7 rounds double"00"buck.Bootstrings were tied around calfs of legs and soaked with bug repellent to keep leechs from climbling any higher into senitive areas(it slowed them but didn't stop em)Cardboard strapped on Mack's radio was from C-ration box.It was stuck in his pack to make it rub his back in a different place,as heavy as it was, it rubbed you no matter what. This is the worst place I have ever been in my life but I met some of the greatest men there.

You look twelve going on a hundred and twelve. Same as that picture of Frank and Greek.
