In 1994 the ?Nation of Islam? declared war on the Briton, Israel, the United States and all of its allies. That declaration was a formal declaration of Jihad, holy war, and ignored by all except Israel.
This defines Jihad: Islamic term, Arabic for 'battle; struggle; holy war for the religion'.
Jihad has two possible definitions: the greater, which is the spiritual struggle of each man, against vice, passion and ignorance. This understanding of jihad has been presented by apologetics of modern times, but is an understanding of the term rarely used by Muslims themselves.
The lesser jihad is simplified to cover holy war against infidels and infidel countries, aiming at spreading Islam. This kind of jihad is described in both the Holy Koran and in the hadiths. Muslim law has divided the world into two entities, d?ru l-'isl?m, the abode of Islam, and d?ru l-harb, the abode of war. Battling against the Abode of war was a duty for a Muslim, as this is the only way for the peace of Islam to take the place of the warlike conditions of the infidels' society. Jihad can be both defence, as well as attacking an enemy.
The enemies of Islam are divided into two groups, the Peoples of the book, ?hlu l-kit?b and the pagans, the k?fir?n. The first group, defined as Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, and Mandeans need only to submit to an Islamic ruler, and live in peace with other Muslims to end the situation where jihad is imperative.
For the pagans there is a principle fairly similar, but they get less rights under the Muslim ruler than the Peoples of the book. While this group generally can live safely inside a Muslim society, some Muslims have propagated that these should either convert to Islam or face death penalty. In situations where the Muslim rulers mean that war has to be waged against the infidels, they should be allowed sufficient of time to convert before the Muslim army attacks.
Jihad is a duty for every Muslim community, but not necessarily for every individual: it's sufficient that a certain number of the the able men perform jihad. The one who dies in the battle against the infidels, becomes a martyr, a shahid, and is guaranteed a place in Paradise as well as certain privileges there.
While offensive jihad, i.e. attacking, is fully permissible in Sunni Islam, it is prohibited for some of the larger groups of Shi'i Islam, which consider only the Imam, now in occultation, as carrying the right to decide to go to war or not.
The Kharijis regard jihad as the sixth pillar of Islam, a position that other groups of Islam have adhered to earlier.
On 9-11 Jihad came to America. America can no longer ignore the threat.

My thought is that we are going to have to get bloodied up a lot more before we come to agree on the threat or what to do about it. Before we rolled into Iraq I prophesized that we do not have the unity or will to pull off an operation like that. Unfortunately, I was correct and just look at us now. Defeat is being rammed into the gullet of victory and political opportunists are boiling out of the woodwork. The mega decietful opportunist of all time, Kerry, is busily planting the seeds of distrust and hatred among us once again, and sorry to say, no one ever won a war that way and we won?t either.
And Razar, you are totally correct. The lesson we learned in Vietnam is that terrorists are to be dealt with in their own currency and it?s vital that terrorists be out terrorized. It wouldn?t bother me one bit if we were to do some beheadings with a chain saw and put up some video clips because that is going to be what it takes. Ugly yes, but the terrorists need to know that we will escalate to and go beyond their level of depravity.
The issue as I see it is that 5-10% of the Moslem population signs up with the Islamic extremists/terrorists. It can be assumed that there is an inexhaustible manpower flow into the Islamic lunatic fringe and this war will go on ad infinitum. So long as the number is kept at the 5-10% number we have a chance of maintaining control but with each terrorist victory that number will grow and that is where our lack of unity and will becomes our cup of hemlock. If Bush is defeated his historic one liner will be ?He dared to fight back?, and that?s all too true, unfortunately, and a statement of where we are.

Well Razar, the conundrum is where do ya hit back and with what. I recall being up the Cau Viet river and seeing the light show when the B52?s were sky plowing on the western horizon. For sure, the flow of Soviet material slowed down for a bit and there was less tonnage seized but every time the Johnson nitwits got to playing suck butt with the Reds and stopped the sky plowing the captured tonnage just sky rocked, both literally and figuratively. My best days were seeing Soviet contraband ammo go up in a huge secondary. Yes! Yes indeed and the more the better. As to the international situation, the Islamic Terrorists are going to pop some heavy WMD, that is inevitable and as sure as day follows night. The only question is where and when, and what the response will be. Right now Syria has got themselves in the eye of the shit-storm and will be sent to a green glowing Stone Age status if some WMD goes up in the mid east, especially if it pops in Israel. Alas, buying property in Damascus is not the best of investments presently as they are squeezing out butt mustard and making deals at the realization that they are target one and in the cross hairs, big time. So we?ll see if Syria continues to be an Islamic Terrorist controlled country or if they back off. My bet is that will screw around and play games until it?s too late. Hey, Syria is trying to strike a deal with Israel right now so they must have some mustard goo running down their pant legs, eh.
