Personally, I love egg nog. However, being a diabetic, I have to stay away from the sugar. Would rather have a sugar-free hot chocolate with a spash of Bailey's!! MMM, just the thing for that frosty Christmas eve!

did folks do egg nog at Christmas during the Revolution?
What did they add to give it, well, you know...warmth?

I think they did Hot Buttered Rum back in the colonial days.

Hot Buttered Rum
1-1/2 shots dark rum
1 teaspoon sugar (preferably superfine)
Boiling water
1 teaspoon butter
Grated nutmeg
Stir rum and sugar until dissolved, add boiling water and top with butter and a dash of nutmeg.

Jumper,

Yeah, they did hot buttered rum but that was a drink you could get at any tavern at any time of the year. Egg flip was usually reserved for the Yuletide season since it required a larger output of money if made with Madeira, sherry, or brandy.

Also, the sugar they used in that era wasn't granulated. It came in a cone-shape, wrapped in heavy paper. You had to either grate it or use a pair of specialized sugar snippers like the one pictured below.
