Dr. Strangelove

Well I guess most of us are old enough to remember Dr. Strangelove. If you don't, it was all about "How to stop worrying and love the Bomb", back in the 1950s&60s.
I for one, don't want my grand kids going through anymore of the worrying about terrorist, like we did back when Russia had the capability to use the "Bomb" and were big and bad enough to do it.
The deal today is, we know who the people are that hate us and they are not big and bad. They just hate us for all the reasons they are using to push the deal through with their people. I feel that we should pursue the enemy and use all resources available to end the fear and pain the terrorist have dealt us.
We are very capable of turning sand to glass over night! I would rather see fear in the enemies eyes than my grand children or any other American.
I hate war and death as much or more than the next guy, however, hate and attacks from a group of terrorist and radicals are non negotiable at this point in time.

When the Roman's were in their hay-day everyone hated the Romans. Little wars were always the norm. When the Spanish discovered the gold of the New World and became the richest country there was, no one liked them. The English, the Dutch, even the Turks and French took shots at them. During most of the 1800s the sun never set on the British Empire. Thus, they were always at war with some country who was trying to take a swing at the he-bull.
Well, we are the biggest and baddest boys on the block. Like those that came before us, we are admired but not liked. It will stay that way until some other country becomes the most powerful. Terrorism is another way of saying, "We can't fight with you toe to toe so we'll cause you some problems just to say we did so."
Without the USSR around anymore, expect little guys to take a sucker punch whenever they get half a chance. It's sad but as far as terrorism, we aint seen nothing yet.
I really do hope I'm wrong.

I remember Doctor StrangeLove in fact I got the movie it's a classic and in between the story plot there are some funny elements to the picture.

1st we got the bomb and that good,
cause that meant there would be peace and brotherhood;
Then Russia got the bomb but we didn't care,
cause the balance of powers were there;
Then China got the bomb but have no fear,
they can't wipe us out for at least five years;

This is all I can remember but it went on for
a few more countries -

I remember the 50's quite well I was trained to dive under
my desk and take shelter. We didn't have a bomb shelter
but my Ma was always worried. Us kids though we didn't
really know how to react to such things to us the only
thing important was playing ball and ice-skating in the
winter - Plus Girl's!!!!

Wasn't there a scene in that movie were the SAC security police were trying to shoot there way into the bunker right in front of a sign that said "Peace is Our Profession"? That one always tickled my funny bone.

I too grew up in the 50's in the middle of the cold war and nuke threats. But like Boats, us kids never thought about it. If my parents were worried about it they never let on. We were more concerned with baseball, swimming, etc.

We were not given the old"Media Blitz" that the people are given today. Otherwise we wouldn't need the history channel to see the atrocities and heroism of the WWII . Kids know more today because of instant satilite communication that is repeated over and over on every channel. We didn't have the Information on Pearl Harbor untill the President announced it over the radio and no one realy new where Pearl Harbor was , but did know Hawaii was a long way off in the middle of the ocean. We all know more about what is going on today including the kids. The wonderful innocense of our youth in other times cannot be duplicated.

What the hell is ice skateing?

Dr. Strangelove was a great satire. Loved how they threw in Col. Bat Gwano and his theory that florination of the water was a commie plot. (actually the more I do read about florination and how it has broken down the fillings in your teeth and put more mercury in your system, a carcinigen, I wonder?) And you have to hoot at the name "Gwano". Also loved Slim Pickens as he rides the nuke out of the B-52.

We all had to do the duck and cover stuff. What's great is going on E-Bay and searching under "Civil Defense" and seeing all this stuff for sale now. Fallout shelter plans, fallout shelter water, etc.

Got myself a great addition to our 1938 home. It's from the Civil Defense Authorities, printed in 1942. Got it because of the upcoming war. It's a window sticker with a picture of a home on it with a big red "V". It says THIS IS A "V" HOME. On the back it lists the reasons why it's a V home and there is a place on the front for your Air Raid Warden to sign it making it "Official".

Sorry I couldn't resist.

My Folks told me that we lived so far out in the sticks that if nuclear war every started we'd be the survivors. So I was instructed to read up on government and government organizational patterns so I could establish and run a new government if anything happened to us. We did have air raid drills, crawling under the desks, etc. But, I think the teachers even knew, we'd be the last place they'd hit. I was a senior in high school during the cuban missle crisis. My folks were worried about another World War and all that entailed but I don't think we ever worried too much about being bombed.

However, living under the treat of nuclear attack must have been quite an emotional strain. I'm sure those people in the D.C. area are living under tremendous stress.

I say a prayer for them everyday.

Andy put up an encapsulated but accurate history of mankind and prediction of things to come. At a time the Neanderthal man owned ice age Europe but then along came Cro-Magnon man and smack, no more Neanderthal man. My theory is that Neanderthal man was too big, strong, mussel bound and thought-limited to fend off the more agile, quick and better thinking Cro-Magnon.

I?ve been racking my brain to remember a poem an Australian business associate sent me some time ago, but the last line was ?If it wasn?t for guns, we?d all be British?. Things just seem to go around and around and it is a crapshoot as to who is ?King of the Mountain? at any given time. But then, an exchange of Nukes would end the cycle for good.

I think thats the song they played as Slim rode the bomb down. That was a great movie.

Ice skating, isn't that what you rebs do in your cars when you you get that quarter inch of snow?

My Dad was civile defense director for our county. We had all that stuff around the house. OD colored boxes and barrels with the red white and blue CD logo on them. They had food and water in them I think. You were supposed to be able to store it in your shelter indefinately. Saw all the nuke test movies too.
