Violence
When you came back from the combat zone did you feel more inclined toward thoughts of violence to resolve others peoples ignorance or did you find you felt a greater aversion to violence then you had before?
Did these thoughts change over the years? |

Was less prone to let people push me around & more willing to
use violence to protect myself & my family..never had to resort to it. That hasn't changed but what HAS changed is that I am not dominated by anger as much as I was. Thank GOD!!!

I can echo Advisor's thoughts.
I will not let people push me around and would use violence to protect myself and my family. Things in my community have been deteriorating lately and I am more inclined to carry a firearm when/where I feel it necessary. I do not feel anger. No changes over the years. The atmosphere in my community has have changed.

I used to belong to a street gang before the service and violence was no stranger, but I definitely took entirely no shit after Nam. Still don?t, but have never looked for trouble or started something.
Funny thing is that I haven't hunted since I came home.

Adviser hit on it pretty close. I wouldn't take no shit from no one from that point on. Found out I would step in for the little guys who were getting killed - the bigger the better - but I did use persuasive implements to make sure I wouldn't get overly killed.
Wife said it took me 10 years to get rid of the mean streak. Today It takes an awful lot to get me going but some little things can really set me off if they hit me at the right time.

An outsiders observation...
When the guys came home from Vietnam they were more inclined to fight. In a short time, they came to an equilibrium where the fighting was more thought out. One thing I've noticed about most veterans and every one who put in 20+ and retired is that each has made a decision on what they will fight for. They don't fight for nothing but they are always ready to fight for home and family. Just an observation. Joy

Like Bill, I was a tough inner-city street kid before the Army so didn't take too much shit. When I returned from Nam, even while still in the Army, didn't take ANY shit. The first 10yrs. after I got out I worked as a logger and lumber mill worker. Was in several bar fights from western WA to western MT. Have mellowed out over the years, but I believe I would still be someone to contend with if riled. I never really felt angry all the time. Have always been on the quiet side. Have always had a pretty slow burning fuse and will really explode when it reachs it's limit. Pretty scary at times, according to the wife and kids.
