![]() Castro Valley man helps Vietnam veterans cope
(EXCERPT) Visit to Indonesian country, By Karen Holzmeister, STAFF WRITER CASTRO VALLEY -- Alan Cook spent parts of 1971 and 1972 in Vietnam as a teenage Army enlistee, but as a survivor of that tragic and divisive war he only discovered "my purpose in life" earlier this year. Cook returned to Vietnam as an escort for members of Sons and Daughters In Touch, the offspring of slain service men and women, who traveled to Southeast Asia to visit the places where their parents fought and died. The 50 offsprings were accompanied by 20 Vietnam vets including Cook, who earlier this month was elected national treasurer of the Maryland-based Vietnam Veterans of America.
