Default Local Sons of Confederate Veterans pay tribute to Civil War legend

Local Sons of Confederate Veterans pay tribute to Civil War legend

(EXCERPT) By ERICA WALSH

For Joey Oller, the end of September always means a road trip. Since
the late 1980s, Oller has traveled to Chickamauga, Ga., the site of
one of the greatest Civil War conflicts, to honor a Hardin County
native who died on the battlefield while leading Kentucky's
Confederate troops.

This year marks the 140th anniversary of Gen. Ben Hardin Helm's death.
Helm was killed Sept. 20, 1863 during the battle at Chickamauga. Each
year, the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans holds two
ceremonies to honor Helm. On Sept. 20, 11 members traveled to Georgia
for a memorial.

"This year was really important," Oller said. "It was special because
we did the ceremony at the exact time and date of Gen. Helm's death
140 years ago."

Oller is lieutenant commander of Gen. Ben Hardin Helm Camp 1730, Sons
of Confederate Veterans. He and the other members of the camp want to
make sure that Helm is remembered, especially in his hometown,
Elizabethtown.

"He was such an important figure in history," Oller said....
