Post Gas Stations of Yesteryear

Old Amercan gas stations from around the country...

Some are abandoned, some are restored, some are still in service...

I remember that...

...the attendant pumped the gas for you...

...and cleaned your windshield...

...and checked your oil...

...and checked your tires...

...you got a FREE map if ya wanted one...

...and in the 60s...

...if ya filled your tank...

...ya got a gift of some kind...

...an iced tea glass with "Esso" on it, or something...

...34 cents per gallon...

...all ya had to do...

...was sit in the car...

...or take a stretch break...

...or go use the can, or something...

...and you got a smile and a "Thank You!".

Do ya'll remember doing this as a kid?
Jumping on the bell cord to make the bell ring?

Yeah, I remember.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS!

Default Also

Check the air in your spare!

I learned from my father, who owned a station for years before going with the company, how to service customers. When I worked at stations, I did all that. At one Atlantic station, if you didn't do it, weather permitting, you got your gas free. "Red Ball Service"

What great pics Steve. Man those old stations were a sight for sore eyes. Now....they are just convienient stores. Yech!

Default yea,...

...

...19.9 was the going price when "he" would let me empty the hoses to fill my motorcycle tank, and it was a free day to ride, and yet a run to the diner for lunch for them might get you a quarter for a tip, then can the .10 cent milky way, and a orange crush for the ride,...

...times have changed, and the term full service means pump it yourself, check your own oil,...

...then again, there was the guy stealing gas a little at a time by putting it in the water/radiator fill up that sat by the pumps,..........lasted as long until the guy came in fast, and loaded up his radiator with gas,..........about 2 blocks down the road, he car stopped quickly,.......................................... .....

Default Boy I really liked those pics.

Rigger - I tried to find a listing of the all the old gas stations on the web but couldn't find one. But this was like memory lane. I guess age does have its rewards. Thanks for those pics.

p.s.

I remember Ryan Gas. 25 Cents a gallon and they had racks of bulk oil in those glass bottles with pour tops sitting by the gas pumps.
I also can remember going there getting two bucks of gas and about 3 to 4 quarts of bulk oil as the pan leaked like a dog. Yep those
were the days. Free Air and all fluids checked and windows washed and clean bathrooms.
