Hidden away just of the main high street in Bury St Edmunds, you'd be forgiven for passing this place with out giving it a second glance, but judging by the food served in this relaxed friendly atmosphere, you would be missing out on a real treat.

Benson Blakes Bar and Grill looks tiny from the outside, but once inside it opens up like Doctor Who's Tardis and the long building makes for an intimate yet spacious place to grab a bite to eat. The theme of space and classic design continues throughout and blends harmoniously with subtle decoration, comfy sofas and clean wooden table and chairs throughout.

Benson Blakes has been nominated for a host of awards in the last couple of years, including being highly commended in England's Best Beefburger competition and this year's award nominations include Bar Person of the Year. With that in mind, a decision on what to have for lunch was easy - it had to be one of these famous burgers, with a nice beverage on the side.

Well, we thought it would be easy... with 19 different burger combinations available on the menu including beef, chicken, tuna and a couple of vegetarian options. Alongside the burgers are tapas, a frequently changing specials menu, salads, paninis and a nice kids menu.

With all this in mind, we still had our minds set on a burger, and it seemed that the majority of our fellow diners had similar thoughts. Choosing the BBQ and the Grilled Mushroom Swiss proved to be an excellent choice, but you get the feeling that any burger ordered here would be just as good. The BBQ sauce and mesquite glaze worked beautiful alongside the tender and juicy homemade burger. Whereas the Grilled Mushroom Swiss offered a different taste sensation, but was still very good.

Arriving on just a chopping board, this novel idea was well thought out and fitted very well with the general relaxed nature of the place. We ordered chips as a side and these were refreshingly home made (with the skins left on) and a real treat and a perfect accompaniment to the meal.

Feeling as smug as a cat that's got the cream (and one whose appetite is satisfied) we felt we've discovered another hidden gem in Bury St Edmunds, and with the addition of a loyalty card, buy 10 burgers and get one with a side free -not a bad deal at all, it may take us a few lunches but we know we'll be back to fill our card up.
