Live artillery shell found in Newton, U.S. Navy called in

NEWTON, Mass. — The U.S. Navy was called to Newton on Wednesday afternoon after a live artillery shell was found. Newton Fire Department officials said the live, 6-inch shell was found near Maguire Court. A department photo showed the rusted ordinance lying on the ground, surrounded by what appeared to be trash. In addition to the fire department, the Newton police and the state police bomb squad are also on the scene. Members of the Navy are being asked to help with assessing the weapon and disposing of it safely. The area is not being evacuated at this time, the department said
