Tamaroa Maritime Foundation Update #3
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those of you interested, here is the latest regarding the Ex-USCGC Tamaroa/USS Zuni:
The Tamaroa/Zuni is now the home ship for Sea Scout Unit 567, making it the largest Sea Scout Ship in the world, beating out the SSS Reliance for that honor. Unit 567's organizational meeting was held Tuesday, December 17th. A second Unit will be organized on the Tam when it moves to Richmond sometime in the spring. Our association with the Boy Scouts will open up a whole new vista for publicity and fundraising opportunities. We have also enlisted the aid of several Naval officers and they are lobbying the navy Department to get financial and material support for our project. The entire NJROTC program is suffering nationwide because of the cutback in active ship visits by the high school cadets. The Tam gives the east coast units an opportunity to visit a "real" ship, and stay overnight.
We are being assisted by the Navy into looking for a marine railway, which is less expensive than a dry dock and more suited for our needs. We are putting together a group of volunteer divers to work on the Tam's bottom before it goes to a yard.
