Default FSB Mary Ann

On this morning, March 28th, 1971 at slightly after 2AM, Charlie company of 1/46 Americal was overran at FSB Mary Ann by elements of the 409th VC Sapper Btn. Almost half of the 250 soldiers were either killed or wounded.

May God rest their souls and grant peace to their families.

Default I remember

When this happened although not the date. I had just arrived back in Chu Lai from operation Lam Son 719. Brought back B Battery of 1/82nd FA 155 towed. Battery had been OPCON to 101st and was inplaced at Khe Sahn. This was a sad story of what will happen when you let your guard down or get complacent. I left RVN in mid April and do not recall the results of the investigation into this tragedy.

I think this kind of thing happened more often then people realized, it happened to us in War Zone C. I think they were waiting for us to land and hit us when they were right on top of the fire base. First warning I got was small arms fire coming in, then they used their heavy stuff to keep our heads down. It worked very well too, they were all over us even thow they had to have lost some to their own incoming fire. Mortars, Rockets and recoiless rifles. They damaged four of the six guns, one of the two guns still firing had a flat tire but kept shooting. Crazy, just plain crazy.

PHO127,
The initial investigation called for a lotta heads to roll. In the end, the Division CO was given a "letter of admonition." The btn co and xo were recommended to be immediately "dismissed," but ended up having their careers frozen. A host of others were reprimanded also.

Some people believed that these guys were grilled because of the reputation that the Americal had at the time.

Never liked that LZ. I was there in 1968, shortly after it was opened. It was a lousy location for a FSB as there were higher elevations in the near vicinity. Never felt safe when we were there. I liked LZ West a whole lot better. I was with A 4/3, 11th Bde. of the Americal.
