Far-left commentator Ian Williams, who writes for something called the Globalvision News Network, points out a hilarious detail on the negotiations over U.N. Security Council Resolution 1483, which lifts sanctions against Iraq:
One of the many absolutely cosmetic concessions the French wrung from the Americans was the change of the word "collaborating" to "working together," to describe the role of the United Nations Special Representative, who had also been upgraded from Special Coordinator. There may some deep psychology at play here. The French ambassador pointed out that the word "collaborate" has some pretty nasty connotations in French.
Williams, who favors sanctions against Iraq now that Saddam Hussein is out of power, takes note of the Syrian abstention, but says "to be honest, one is never sure whether it is high principle or low intellect that decides Damascus' votes." Has anyone ever suspected the Syrian Baathists of acting on "high principle"?
United Press International reports the Syrian regime now claims "it instructed its delegate at the U.N. Security Council to record a 'yes' vote"--but that it did so several hours after the council passed the resolution. "In a statement, Syria's Foreign Ministry said could not take part in the initial voting at the Security Council because 'consultations over the content of the draft resolution were not completed.' " Inefficiency is one of the few redeeming features of Arab tyranny.
