Spybot Search and Destroy

Have any of you used the "Spybot Search and Destroy" program or anything similar ? My son and I have used it with no harmful effects. I thought my system was fairly adware and spyware free,
but it found 183 suspect items, which I deleted. They are all over the place and in some cases report back everywhere you go on the internet. For more info go to the web site above or go to www.google.com and type in "Spyware" for lots of examples.
