Bush 'police' were civilians
FOREIGN STAFF
BUS drivers, cooks and civilian office workers dressed as police during the operation to protect George Bush, the US president, when he visited the Australian capital, Canberra, last week.
Police yesterday confirmed reports in the Canberra Times that 46 civilians who work in police stations were dressed as police during the visit.
The Australian Federal Police commissioner, Mick Keelty, denied claims it was done to back up police numbers, which were stretched by the massive security operation. A spokeswoman said employees wore police vests so they could be admitted to secure areas.
The newspaper reported: "Office workers were apparently ordered to impersonate their police colleagues by wearing police overalls and reflective vests with AFP insignias, and drive police cars with warning devices activated."
Some allegedly drove cars in the presidential motorcade.
