In 1865, Mary Walker was the 1st (and only) woman to receive the US Medal of Honor. She was a Civil War surgeon. Her medal was rescinded in 1916, however, when the Army purged its files to cut down on what they thought were "unwarranted" issues. It wasn't re-instated until 1976. In 1886, Grover Cleveland was the 1st President married inside the White House. Hattie McDaniel (in 1940), was the 1st black actress to win an Oscar. She won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Mammy in "Gone with the Wind". In 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 1st US president to speak on television. He spoke at the opening session of the New York World's Fair on April 30, 1939. By an Act of Congress signed by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872, a national park was dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people. "Which park was it - Yellowstone." What is the name of the world's smallest monkey - Cebuella pygmaea. Which lung is bigger (in most people) - the left, or the right - The right. A diagram of the lungs of a normal human shows that the right lung has three distinct lobes, while the left lung has only two. As a result, the right lung can hold more air than the left one. What clever inventor died on this day in 1988 - Richard C. Adams. He invented the paint roller while working in his basement. The inspiration came to him when he was challenged by the shortage of paintbrushes during WWII. ![]()
