Local Child Porn Arrests Detailed

DALLAS -- A three-year investigation into an alleged child pornography ring has netted nearly 150 arrests nationwide, more than half of which occurred in North Texas. Investigators have arrested 56 people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and, to date, secured 17 local convictions.

Tuesday, Dallas Police Department and local FBI officials provided some details into the investigation. The Dallas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and Dallas FBI are collaborating on the case.

"I think you have a whole group of individuals in our society who had this interest, didn't act out on it until the Internet became so popular," Lt. Bill Walsh, of the Dallas Police Department, said. "And they thought they could do it without being detected."

Former McKinney Fire Marshall Billy Bob Dunfield was caught up in the investigation. McKinney city officials fired Dunfield during January. Dunfield now awaits sentencing on federal charges of possessing eight computer images of young girls engaged in sex acts.

Authorities said 140 people nationwide have been arrested in connection to the suspected child porn ring. The suspects come from all walks of life, authorities said, many of whom are self-employed or corporate white-collar professionals. Most of the suspects have no prior criminal records.

The suspects are accused of purchasing and trading child porn via the Internet, which is a federal offense that carries a five- to 15-year sentence. A California credit card verification business provided tips on the suspects' identities and credit card activities.

The investigation began when an individual notified law enforcement authorities after receiving a "spam" e-mail solicitation for a child porn Internet site.
