Teacher Gets a Hero's Send-off
To the United States army, he's Sergeant Denis Topliffe, Intelligence Specialist. But to his students at Coeyman's Elementary School in Ravena, he's their teacher, Mister T.
"Mr. Topliffe is going to be going and doing his other job. Because I'm not just a teacher, that you guys have come to know over the years. I'm also in the army."
And being called to active duty. Today, Mister Topliffe, a special ed teacher, says goodbye to his students, days before he gets ready to ship off to Iraq for two years.
"Sometimes it's a bit scary. Cause I know my kids are scared because it's going to be a long time. Mister topliffe will be gone for quite a while."
The kids, gathering in the gym to say goodbye, wearing red, white and blue, singing patriotic songs, and letting Mister Topliffe know he's in their thoughts and prayers.
Mister Topliffe promises to let his students know what's going on too; e-mailing them every chance he gets to let them know, he's okay.
