![]() I was visting with my Uncle Joe today. He's a WWII vet who took part in the invasion of Kiska, Alaska and would up spending almost 3 years there. He showed me a bunch of photos he had saved and some old issues of Stars & Stripes. In one of them was the following poem I thought was kinda funny and tells how at least one GI felt about being stationed there:
I hope that I shall never see Another island without a tree. A land like this with heaven's curse, The lonliest spot on God's green earth. A spot in the sea all covered with snow Where no one really wanted to go. Not a town in this lonely spot And womankind is never about. Somewhere twixt Heaven and Hell, There's nothing to buy and nothing to sell. And when you leave, you'll come back, never, But gladly shout, "Goodbye forever!" ------------------------------------------------------- I wonder how he really felt!
