01-20-81, where were you on that day?
It was the 444th that our hostages were being held, Ronald Reagan (thankfully as Carter had screwed up pretty bad dealing with this mess.) was sworn in as the President of the United States.
Proudly Myself and some 6000 plus shipmates were off the coast of Lebanon. The USS Independence and her task force. (Closer to the coast and at a higher sate of readiness than the Nimnuts.) Indy stood at "alert 5" (Fighter jets were manned and would be in the air in under 5 Min's if needed.) all day and into the night. It was a bit tense that day to say the least. Seems that day has put been forgotten, by some. May the Shipmates we lost that Cruise R.I.P.

Sparrow was at NAS North Island with HS-8. However, was with the Kitty Hawk CV-63 when hostages were taken, left PI on Thanksgiving day in Nov 1979. If I remember correctly we spent about 75 - 80 days at sea just making a big circle in the IO along with the Midway Battle Group. The Skipper got on the Ships' TV and showed us the Order of Battle we were going to use against Iran if we were going to take any action. Thought we were gonna do a damn damn on Iran. Just sailed around the IO then left for PI again when the Nimitz Battle Group relieved us in February 80.

I was living in Murphy Canyon in the sixth grade and my dad was stationed at Miramar. I was the elected school board secretary for Jean Farb Middle school and had just passed a resolution to divide the land bridge across the canyon between bikes and pedestrians (the division remains to this day, I checked it out a couple years back hehe) I remember it well and was very impressed with Reagan as they let the hostages go immediately after he was made president. One of the hostages sons went to my school. When he made it back stateside we had been working for weeks on the homecoming. We had yellow ribbons all over town and we lined the streets cheering. He came home riding in a white limousine procession standing out of the top window waving to everyone. This was the first year I had any interest in politics.
Thanks guys for holding the line while we grew up |

I was sitting in my office, watching the Gipper being sworn in, and giving thanks that we survived Mr. Peanut.
