Need Help With Anger Management

My Secretary is one of the sweetest kindest ladies I know. About two years ago mastectomy for breast cancer. Her brother in law is one of those self proclaimed genius. He said he had done a lot of reading on cancer and told her that if she ate this vegetable, fruit, and nut diet and overdosed on vitamins she wouldn't have to worry about cancer because he had done all this reading and he knew the "natural cure" for cancer. Against all advice from her doctors and friends she decided to fore go radiation and chemo therapy. For the past three weeks she has been suffering from extreme back pain. Yesterday after a battery of tests and scans she was diagnosed with cancer again. The cancer is now located in her lower spine and is inoperable. She will be starting radiation tomorrow.

Several years ago my brother in law read all these books and did basically the same thing and he died of cancer.

My anger: 1. These nuts that write these books and claim to know how to cure these diseases the "natural way" and knock conventional medicine should be shot!

These are just two people of many I know of who have read these health nut books and disregarded conventional medicine and died. Yet, I know of many more who have gone with conventional medicine and have survived cancer. I'm just really angry about this. I'm angry at these people who claim to have these exceptional cure rates (with no proof) and write books and have web sites claiming to be know it cure for cancer and yet they are killing people! Something should be done about this!
But right now I'm just right down angry! Because my friend and secretary is suffering needlessly because of some nuts out there claiming to know something that they know nothing about.

Hello Keith, while I can offer no real help, I can tell I've been in the same situation. My wife has a friend "who I've nick named Dr. *****. Well her friend has offered all kinds of advice about my wife's on going thyroid condition. (She's hyper thyroid.) This includes every thing from natural meds, diet, and prescription meds as well. She sends countless web site info and feels she knows what she is talking about. A self professed expert.
I have told my wife repeatedly to stick to what the conventional Doctors recommend. Thankfully she has, the thyroid was burnt out with radiation. She is still making the adjustment and taking the meds her Dr. put her on.
This didn't make her friend happy, but at least my wife is feeling better.
I don't know what if anything can be done about these type of people. People are not in any shape to think things out when this kind of advice is given. Most opt for a quick cure and are willing to try almost anything.
It's a sad situation.

I fully understand your anger,my friend.My suggestion would be to try and channel that anger toward the charlatans that prey on the sick and infirm with their erroneous claims of miraculous cures.Talk to politicians,judges,friends and neighbors and expose the quack in question.Write letters to the editors of every newspaper in the state of Washington-hell,the United States!

There's 2 things we're all guilty of: We hear what we want to hear, and We have a tendency to take the easy way out. The sad part is we might end up paying the ultimate price for a poor decision. There's no going back, Just make sure she gets all her treatments no matter how sick she gets, and maintain a positive
attitude.

You can't do anything about her but maybe you could get a cancer expert to come to your church and give a little talk on the progress being made in cancer treatment. There is a lot of ignorance out there on this, even among members of the medical community. My sister is a church secretary. Her physician is also a member of her church. He did breast cancer surgery on her and proudly proclaimed, "I got it all!" As you can imagine she was ecstatic and when my wife, an oncology nurse told here there is no such thing as "I got it all." with any certainty. She told sis she needed to undergo a chemotherapy session and told her this lowered the rate of recurrence by 30%. Well, the physician, who she called by his first name, told her it wasn't necessary. Three months later she had a recurrence proving my wife to be telling the truth and the physician to be a liar. Three months was much to soon for a new tumor to grow. It was one he missed. She then had another surgery (by the same guy!) and the chemo and it has been ten years without a recurrence. IF a surgeon tells you he got it all, except in skin cancers, run like hell. It ain't that simple. You should always be referred to an oncologist.

It goes to say that cancer kills everyone if you live too long or your immune system goes to hell. This scares me the most the dying of cancer. I've had one gone through it once and and now I think about it more and more. Remission is great but the little cell is there somewhere just waiting for that moment.

I haven't changed my habits much and I still eat and do things that I normally did. I'm abit heavier lately but thats because I'm pretty static not working in the field anymore.

Chemo was tough and until they can remove the cancer cells by some vaccine if its even possible we will all sooner or later get it almost 90% of the time. I was told everyone has the cells in their body and its just our immunity that keeps most of it in check.

Don't get angry Keith - people who go through this need positive attitudes in order to help the sick get through it. Its not in your nature to be angry any more. Saddened maybe and a bit disappointed is about all you can really generate. Remember your good book and keep us all in your prayers as we'd like to keep you in ours.
