May 30, 1946 (30th day of the 4th month, Year of the Dog [Binh Tuat]): Disregarding the referendum provision in the agreement negotiated with Ho Chi Minh in March, Admiral Thierry d'Agenlieu, the French High Commissioner in Vietnam, proclaims the autonomous Provincial Republic of Cochin China within the French Union.

SECOND INDOCHINA WAR:
May 30, 1960 (6th day of the 5th month, Year of the Rat [Canh Ty]): US Green Berets arrive to train ARVN.

May 30, 1964 (19th day of the 4th month, Year of the Dragon [Giap Thin]) (US Advisory): Operation Chinh Nghia begins.

May 30, 1965 (30th day of the 4th month, Year of the Snake [At Ti]) (US Defense): The NVA siege of the Duc Co Special Forces/CIDG camp begins.

May 30, 1966 (11th day of the 4th month, Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive): Operation Reno I begins.

May 30, 1968 (4th day of the 5th month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase IV): In the first confirmed use of 100mm guns in II Corps, the enemy fires 13 rounds into Fire Support Base 29, 10 miles west of Dak To in Kontum Province.

May 30, 1968 (4th day of the 5th month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase IV): Foxtrot Ridge: Echo Company, which relieved Foxtrot Company and now holds the ridge, is attacked during the night by the NVA, but drives them off, killing at least 96 enemy troops.

May 30, 1968 (4th day of the 5th month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase IV): A downed F-105 pilot is rescued in Laos.

May 30, 1968 (4th day of the 5th month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase IV): Battle of Fire Base Coral: Centurion Tanks from 1 Troop and APCs support infantry during a fierce fight in an enemy bunker system 3000 yards from FSPB Coral.

May 30, 1968 (4th day of the 5th month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase IV): Operation Nevada Eagle update.

May 30, 1970 (26th day of the 4th month, Year of the Dog [Canh Tuat]) (US Sanctuary Counteroffensive): Cambodia: A/7/17th Cavalry scouts locate an enemy compound.

May 30, 1972 (18th day of the 4th month, Year of the Rat [Nham Ty]) (US Cease-Fire): Nguyen Hue/Easter Offensive: In Kontum city, the attrition caused by air-strikes and gunships has allowed ARVN forces to counterattack and regain the initiative. To dislodge the enemy, they are fighting from bunker-to-bunker, using hand grenades. Shortly before noon this date, they regain control of the entire hospital complex. Only a few scattered pockets of resistance in the northeastern area of the city remain in NVA hands, but these are slowly but steadily cleaned out during the rest of the day. Meanwhile, President Thieu flies in during the afternoon, praises the defenders and promotes Col. Ba to Brigadier General.
