SECOND INDOCHINA WAR:
August 20, 1964 (Year of the Dragon [Giap Thin]) (US Advisory) : Operation Thang Long 24 begins in Pleiku Province.
August 20, 1966 (Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive Phase II): Operation Allegheny begins in Quang Nam Province.
August 20, 1967 (Year of the Goat [Dinh Mui]) (US Counteroffensive Phase III): Operation Coronado IV update: The battle of Ben Luc. Meanwhile, other elements of the MRF begin a reconnaissance-in-force operation into the Parrot's Beak area of Long An Province (along Vam Co Dong River above Ben Luc), the most distant operation from base to date.
August 20, 1967 1967 (Year of the Goat [Dinh Mui]) (US Counteroffensive Phase III): U.S. aircraft fly a new one-day record 209 missions over North Vietnam.
August 20, 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): US troops lose five KIA and 24 WIA in an ambush in the Song Chang Valley (better known to the Americans as AK Valley), Quang Tin Province.
POSTBELLUM:
August 1997 (Year of the Ox [Dinh Suu]): King Sihanouk returns to Cambodia to try and negotiate a peace settlement between the two warring parties.
