Ron,

That must have been a sight!

Wish you could have gotten some pics.

Never saw anything like that when I lived there...but I did go to that big shindig that Houston has every year...what is it?...Houston Livestock and Rodeo? Top Name country singers, etc.

Got to see the Budweiser wagon and those big horses...Clydesdales, I think?

And got to see Charly McLain sing. Got her autograph too!

Default Both of my grandmothers

Were born in Oklahoma, Indian Territory. I remember them telling stories of "When the Boys" would go on cattle drives. Longhorns were dangerous and the women had to be on wagons escorted with men with guns if they had to go near a herd. Over the years they remembered several men being gored and killed by longhorns. There used to be a longhorn herd in the Wichita Mtn Wildlife Refuge just north of Ft. Sill along with buffalo herds. Several people would get gored and killed each year trying to get close to the buffalo and longhorns for pictures.

You must have been talking about Okie longhorns, a rather schizophrenic breed if there ever was one! I'm sure that neither Darlin' Sis nor I could understand how a critter could be both an Okie and an Longhorn at the same time, so no wonder they were crazily going about goring people.

Truth be known, most Longhorn cattle are quite gentle beasts. Several years ago, I was visiting a friend on his ranch southwest of Pearsall, TX, and registered longhorns were his secondary cash crop, his first being deer-hunting leases. We were in a very large corral with about 35 head of cattle, a mixture of momma cows and young heifers. Mandy, my buddy's three-year old daughter was walking around with us; some of the momma cows would carefully approach her, gave her a sniff and hovered around her in a very protective manner. Blaine, her daddy, was raised on a ranch in South Texas, and knew his litle girl was quite safe.

Must have been that younger generation of 1903 Longhorns were wilder.

Grandma Cole was born in 1897 near what is now Seminole Ok.
Grandma Whitten was born in 1903 in what is now Idabel Ok.

Idabel was named after my Grandma Ida Margaret Whitten and the Railroad Station managers Daughter Bella ??

Tidbit. The last person hanged in Mc Curtain County Ok for cattle thevin was hung in 1924 with my great uncle Bascoms rope. He stole some of Uncle Bascoms cattle and was given a fair trial and a right nice hangin, in about 20 minutes after being caught.

Don't know much about them squirrley okie longhorns, but ours are a rather tame and friendly bunch. 'Smatter of fact, I met an extremely friendly two-legged variety on the campus of The Univesity of Texas at Austin, and she deomonstrated emphatically how cultured and urbane the breed had become!

Doncha just love how our ancestors got them names?!! Great story.

And congrats to your Great Uncle Bascom! Seems like people back then had a greater apreciation for the multitude uses of rope, properly placed.

Hook 'em Horns!
