If you'll recall, ol' Mohammar had his own personal epiphany right after we invaded Iraq, 'fessin' up about the nuclear stuff he had been acquiring. You may have corrctly assumed that he could have been next on the US military's "Exotic Places to Visit List" and didn't like the odds. With some quiet pressure, he can be somewhat of a stabilizing factor in the Muslim world, but I think we'll follow the now sacred words of Ronaldo Maximus Reagan: "Trust, but Verify!"

Personally, I don't care if they ever embrace democracy, as I'm not convinced that it's a legitimate form of government in the first place. The underlying motivating factor in the equation of warming relations is their oil; there may be a bit of 'divide and conquer' maneuvering going on under the surface, no pun intended. If we can soto voce be assured of a stable supply of oil from them, irrespective of what the rest of OPEC might decide, so much the better for us.

O'l Mu seems like a bad attitude Pee Wee Herman on a camel and since the time his armored assault units got severely mauled by Chadian tribal militia in pick-up trucks; he?s been searching for some National Identity nads.

In the interim, Pan Arab Nationalism has gone poof with the demise of Saddam?s forces and the curtailing of Syrian regional aspirations. Pee Wee Mu doesn?t have a camel to ride now, is sitting on a one legged stool and in awe at the wonder of it all.

And somewhere along the line he probably figured out that Al Qaeda has him targeted and has every intention of grabbing up Libya and forcing an Islamic State, but without Mu of course.
