![]() SEATTLE Oct 8, 2006 (AP)? A magnitude 4.5 earthquake rattled homes east of Mount Rainier on Saturday night, but no injuries or damage were immediately reported.
The quake struck just before 8 p.m. about 7 miles east of the mountain's summit, said Tom Yelin of the University of Washington Seismology Laboratory. Yelin said he did not think the quake was associated with any volcanic activity. Residents in Packwood, Maple Valley, Enumclaw and Renton reported feeling the earthquake, which was followed by two smaller aftershocks. An earthquake hit 8 miles east of Mt. Rainier. Causing much speculation. Is Mt Rainier going to erupt or is forming a new volcano in the Cascades. The area of the earthquake is somewhat unusual in that it wasn't directly on the Mountain or near a fault line. Lots of speculation on this quake. |

![]() Keith - I think its just a matter of time before the Earth trembles along all the fault lines. It has to come somewhere and has since time began. It's amazing how much geo-activity has been happening in the last 10 years. Let's hope for the best.

![]() Something I read about "... He is creating..." come to mind! Plate tectonics are a wonderful reminder that I'm not in charge, nicer guy you'd never meet anywhere, in all lack of modesty! Saw an interesting program on the Discovery channel, I believe, about how a school district in the glide slope of Mt. Ranier has an evacuation plan in the event of something catastrophic happens. If Ranier is anything like Mt. St. Helena (sp?), I'd re-check my evac plan.

![]() Steve - good site
I noticed that on 09-Oct-06 @ 01:35 in North Korea a 4.2 recording what is really interesting is the depth being 0.00 miles. This had to be the incident that was reported on the news. Thanks

![]() The study of volcanos has shown us one thing. They usually give many hints as to what they are about to do. Those living in the dangerous areas around Mount Rainier should have plenty of time to get out of harms way before a major disaster hits. I've seen the plans that some of these areas have. It is somewhat humorous because these folks should all be moved out long before a major mud slide or erruption hits. We know when these volcanos in the U.S. are going to do something. Large amount of ash fall out in Eastern Washington is probably more of a hazzard than mud flows. Ash fall out is so fickle, it all depends upon the weather and how the winds are blowing. However, Mt. Rainier being an older volcano probably won't have a violent eruption like St. Helens. Most scientists believe that Mt. Baker outside of Bellingham, WA is potentially the dangerous Volcano in the cascades. It is young and very close to large population areas. I'm more concerned about Mt Baker than Rainier. However, there are small cinder cones all over the cascades that could be transformed into a major Volcano. And, it all depends on what kind of eruption it is. The Volcano "Kilauea" on Hawaii has been pouring out lava continuously since 1983. It is making the Big Island even bigger every day. Which Cascade volcano will strike next, who knows. Rainier gets all the attention because its big pretty, and close to a Major City.

![]() Hang on to your shorts! There are 3 large caldara in Yosemite National Park. The original eruption there was 160,000 years ago. Scientists are watching the activity very closely there. There is now evidence there will be another "world" altering eruption there again. The eruption would make St. Helens look like a burp. It would drop the earths temp near 6 deg. Not too significant? The "breadbasket" would be destroyed, tropical forest plants would die, animals and people would die from breathing the ash...1,000 miles away. The ash contains "powdered" glass (super heated silica, sand). Good for the lungs.
It will happen, as history repeats itself. The question is...when?
