I'll tell ya, anything that big that lives and breathes...I'm skeered of!
Maybe we should call Senator McCain. He can send over Caribou Barbie to take care of 'em!

Steve I can relate to the destruction those cute animals can cause. So far this year they have wiped out my new fruit trees ate all my apples and broke limes off up to three inchs thick. They racked my magnolia tree tearing out alot of limbs. My garden was either ate or stomped so I have no love loss for elk. they are beautiful to look at but taste much better.

Yep they have these big creatures coming through the yard of my wifes office. She is the office manager of a Camping and Retreat Center in the Mountains west of Ellensburg. These big bulls can weigh over 1,000 lbs. They can do lots of damage. The farmers in our area will tell you that elk are the most destructive of all the wild creatures. Thy tear down fences and destroy hay stacks and ruin alfalfa fields. Beautiful animals but in an urban setting they could be destructive. Even in farm land they can be quite destructive. But, do they ever eat well.

The deer and elk here in Montana haven`t really been a problem for me as my vegetable garden is unaccessable to them with hedges and fence. They can knock themselves out eating off the rest of the property-they`re fattening up just right.
The one critter here that has been a pain in the butt for me has been Pepe le Pew rooting about in my lawn and leaving behind his stench. I`ve discovered that turning on the outdoor lights keeps Pepe over at the neighbor`s property.

I ran into Pepe's cousin this morning walking out to my van. I was about 10 feet away from it when he came ambling out from underneath. He took one look at me and that tail shot up. We both froze and I guess he figured that I was no threat and off he went. Whew! That was a close one.

Wonder why somebody couldn't invent an "elk repellant"...maybe a scent that would run them off.
I dunno...a scent that smells like wolves or something. Don't think that would work with skunks. They've kinda got the market cornered on scents.

Griz,
A skunk trap may be an easy answer. Very easy to build and very effective. Just one principle to follow; the trap must be totally enclosed, a skunk won’t spray when in an enclosed and dark environment. The one I built was about four ft. long and a ft. square, with a spring loaded vertical snap down door and I baited with bacon. To be sure I didn’t have the neighbor's cat in the trap, I knocked together sand box, moistened the sand and checked out the foot print when the trap sprung, skunks are five toed critters. Doesn’t harm the critter, so I just transported the trap to a suitable release area, quick shot of engine starting either through a small hole in the top, shook the critter out of the trap and in a few minutes the skunk comes awake and wonders off. Oh, I removed myself to a safe distance to watch the recovery. He he, I got to be the neighborhood skunk man until the invasion abated, oh well. Scamp PS. Crazy insane stuff, but the County animal control bunch rent a skunk trap for $5 a day, aarrgg. But it is not an enclosed trap, double aarrgg. They say to just throw a blanket over the sprung trap, ya sure, good way to get sprayed.
