DURHAM, N.C.— Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today traveled to North Carolina where she joined Congressman David Price and other state, local and private sector partners to discuss collaborative efforts to build safer, more secure and more resilient communities.* Secretary Napolitano also visited Duke University to participate in an on-stage discussion as part of the Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture series.

“Homeland security begins with hometown security, and we all have a role to play,” said Secretary Napolitano. “The challenges we face are evolving and changing, and we–as a Department and as a nation–must constantly adapt to address threats.”

Secretary Napolitano’s on-stage discussion at Duke University was the eighth address as part of her campus lecture series, which began with the “State of Homeland Security” address in January.* During her remarks, Secretary Napolitano highlighted the Department’s homeland security missions—underscoring the importance of working with Universities to recruit the best and brightest for the next generation of homeland security professionals.

"It was an honor to travel with Secretary Napolitano as she visited the Fourth District today and spoke at Duke University,” said Congressman David Price. “With our university and research base we are equipped to help our nation meet the homeland security needs of today and tomorrow."

While in North Carolina, Secretary Napolitano also participated in a roundtable discussion with Congressman Price, Science and Technology Directorate Under Secretary Dr. Tara O’Toole, and other state, local and private sector partners to discuss the role of DHS in research and development. Secretary Napolitano and Congressman Price then joined Assistant Secretary for the Office of Health Affairs Dr. Alexander Garza for a demonstration of the North Carolina Collaboratory for Bio Preparedness project—a public-private partnership to develop, test and implement an advanced nationwide bio-surveillance system.
